Reliance Township Jamnagar
Modern Township Built for Reliance employees associated with the Petroleum Refinery. I visited it back in 01 and it was one of the things that really opened my eyes to the kind of development that is going on in India.

I know what you mean about the design, there are other houses there that are designed in a sort of Spanish style, two storey, terracotta tiled rooves etc, which makes a lot of sense for the climate.
But I assume the Reliance worker who took these photos mustve lived in the first building or something? The whole township is actually of a pretty decent size, a rough measure on Google Earth would put it at about 450ish acres at that time (Big if you're from the UK anyway!) I'm just not sure if the size is conveyed in the pics, but its hard to complain when these are probably the only pics available of the area! |

Cheers for that! Was off by a full 50 Acres, mathematics was never my strongpoint!
![]() Man, the whole area looks so parched on Google Earth, but with Sardar Savadar and (someday) Kalpasar, hopefully, it'll look more like the pics than the sattelite image! |

Interesting pics!
The landsat image is a false color image. Basically the redder the areas on the image, the more foliage (greener) Hence farm fields look like dirt stretches

Depends on the images they source from. From what I've noticed of their India converage, there it's rarely true color

More individuality - I dont know the appeal of living in a township where every building looks the same. |

If you look at the Google Earth image that has been posted, there are distinct areas that have different styles, but I have a feeling thats even worse lol, everyone thinking that the grass is greener (or less red!) on the other side. Im sure the colours are slightly "wrong", but the area in the bottom-right for example, where it says "Digital Globe" is just wasteland/desert. Even barren plots like that can be developed as long as the water supply is good enough. |

Yeah - although the image is red saturated, from looking at the crops at the top, it seems just outside the township is a massive dusty wasteland like you said - not sure if jatropha plants would survive there, but I would plant them just to try and make it look a little greener. Greenery always makes stuff look better.

![]() Also, although some dusty parts of India are inherently more suited to the Spanish/Mexican/Arab/North African style of housing, with flat roofing, and white walls to reflect heat, I have always much preffered East Asian or North European styles of housing, and wish more projects would take their inspiration there - use more wood and stuff. I guess everyone has different taste - if I was building a house in India, id try to make it out of stone, and my interior would be an open apartment style modern/minimalist with one big floor, with a few antique statues of Buddha or some Hindu god scattered around for decoration. |

All the areas shown in green here can supposedy handle jatropha plantation, including many dusty states:

I say more ambition is needed, the Americans created the city of Pheonix out of a barren wasteland. As long as the water supply is there, the same thing can be done in all those regions.
I feel that Indian development has sometimes been stunted by the attitude of "well, at least we're doing something" after the years of stagnation. When in fact a lot more probably needed to be done to catch up with the rest of the world (who aren't exactly standing still) I agree with you about the climate effective architecture, being in that region in the summer, when it can easily reach the mid 40s, light, airy buildings are essential. (Unless you can afford AC) Simple things like placing solar panels on the roof terraces would really help getting around the problem of power cuts without resorting to loud petrol driven back up generators, but alas, the mentality just isnt there yet.
