***The Alcázar of Columbus***

This majestic building was built in 1515 by order of Diego Columbus, son of Christopher Columbus. Its the first building in the Americas with architectural details in Gothic, Isabelline, and Classic styles.

The Alcázar is located between two important gates in the walls that once sorrounded the colonial city: to the south the gate of San Diego and to the north the Las Atarazanas.

The structure is rectangulare in shape, divided into two stories and has two external bodies united by a grand central corridor and two galleries. The portal is of the Isabelline style while the other decorative elements are more of the Italian Renaissance style.

In the 1950s, the ruins were subjected to a process of reconstruction and restoration that gave the structure its original splendor. In the actuality within the Alcázar operates a museum exhibiting period furniture and objects of the purest Spanish colonial style.
