Yes a wonderful book that was produced in the mid 1980's. One of the first glossy city promotional books out. I don't think you can get it any more. It is called;

Christchurch...A City of cities. The text is by Brian Priestley and the pictures are by Grant Nelson.

It's full of funny and interesting ditties to discribe the many city aspects that make up Christchurch which by all accounts appears to be a quirky and diverse place.

On one of my visits home someone said to me, everytime you return home to Christchurch you discover a new facet to the place you never knew was there when you lived there.

Digging into my huge stolen-image library once more.

My intention here is to showcase the side of Chch many casual visitors don't see or know about, and the marked Californian contrast to the English image usually portrayed by official galleries.

New Brighton beach (includes what is claimed to be the largest ocean pier in Australasia).

Probably the nicest public library in NZ. Not the sort of place I'd feel compelled to bury my head in a book though.

New Brighton mall.

St. Andrews Hill/Mt. Pleasant viewable from suburban New Brighton, as it is from most the East side of the city. Because it marks the start of the South waterfront area, it gives one the feeling of the seaside being close (even if it isn't) from wherever you can see it.

One big mofo of an Estuary that looks more like a harbour when the tide is high.

Views of Sumner and environs from Southshore.

The long road to Sumner (through other waterfront suburbs first). Again you see St. Andrews Hill/Mt. Pleasant looming in the background.

Passing the Estuary. When the tide is high, it feels more like a long ocean-side drive.

Streets of Sumner.

Sumner beach.

Scarborough Head from Sumner (Cave Rock).

Sumner township from Cave Rock.

Base of Scarborough Head.

Views of Sumner from Scarborough.

Taylors Mistake.

Views from Moncks Spur and Mt. Pleasant.

Lyttelton road tunnel. The longest road tunnel in NZ at 1.9km.

Mt. Cavendish Gondola.

Chch is not that small. The built up area that lays before you on any of the Port Hills is larger in area than Central Auckland.

The following images are slowly working our way West along the Port Hills to Cashmere (though images are faced in various directions).

It could do with a giant white sign that says CHRISTCHURCH.

Included for irony.

Sorry for slowing the page down with 102 images.

I was gonna extend the walkaround but it turned into too much of a big job. This is just an identical repost from the NZ forum.

Map for reference:

(Done with stolen photos.)

Armagh

Gloucester

OK, this next one might not be quite "utopian", but if it's ugly, it's a hip ugly.

Worcester

Hereford
The South side of this stretch is one of the best-looking urban bits of Chch.

Cashel

Lichfield
Including Lichfield in the "utopian" might be the most controversial, but the South side of the street is incredible. It looks like anarchy - in a good way. Probably topping that bit of Hereford for the best urban stretch in Chch. (The corner building on the first here was replaced after a fire.)

Now going South down the three main vertical streets. Not exclusively pretty all the way down, but still awesome.

Manchester

It just needs the yellow Para Rubber building on the left and and the grey/blue Penny Cycles building on the right done away with. (I don't think Para Rubber is in there now, so maybe there's been work on that space.)

Colombo

**** yeah.

Getting a bit more low-rent, but still charming.

The hump only included because I love it - especially the view of the hills behind it.

Durham--Oxford/Cambridge--Durham

I particularly love this view seen on these next two.

No, Christchurch is New Zealand's third largest city. The largest is Auckland, then second is the nation's capital Wellington, then Christchurch.

It is the largest on the South Island though.

No, Christchurch is the 2nd largest city in NZ, it overtook Wellington some years ago and continues to grow faster.
