Orlando International Airport

INTERMODAL CENTER:

Officials at Orlando International Airport are preparing to move ahead with the construction of a transportation hub, which will be the first piece of the south terminal complex.

The facility, which will include buses, taxis, resort shuttles such as Disney's Magical Express and potentially rail, is estimated to cost at least $200 million, and may also include a hotel and conference center.

The facility would precede the planned south terminal, which calls for a 24-gate, 2.2 million-square-foot terminal with skylights and a central garden.

Orlando's airport is the most visually pleasing I've seen. Really beautiful.

this was a preliminary rendering for the South Terminal Complex orientation with alignment for HSR. Not sure what the new terminal layout will be now. However, the design was finalized over a week ago:

Apparently, there is a 200 page study from late 2005 delineating the details about the Intermodal Center. The above map is accurate for that report. The plans call for two intermodal centers; one for the north complex and one for the new south complex. LRT is the rail referenced in the report which would connect both terminal complexes.

HSR is also contemplated for the buildings. What I don't know is whether Commuter Rail, or rather whether the CFRAIL will connect in some way to OIA, either with a direct rail link, or with a station where passengers can switch to another rail technology that would continue into the airport property.

I'd almost guarantee that GOAA took a long hard look at Miami-Dade's MIC project when deciding on which direction they wanted the future of OIA to go.

Those rendering are not entirely clear but does the new terminal abandon the landside/airside model, and if so, what the hell for? THat is by far the best model for airports I have ever seen

I don't think it does. the half-moon bldgs. are the landside, which connect to the intermodal center/ airside via those walkways.

however, there doesn't appear to be any more AGT connections between the two sides (except, in the first and second renderings of the North Terminal, the right-most train station is the new (probably AGT perhaps LRT) station that will connect North to South. It's already built.)

I don't understand the railraods on these models! How do they connect to any outside railroad lines?

Here's some photos of the Antonov 24 and another cargo giant that can land at OIA. The Antonov flew in back in 2004 or 2005 to deliver a component to Crystal River's nuclear power plant. The rest of the haul was at grade-- truck or train...

Here is Airside 2's artwork display. Airside 2 was the newest airside, built in the late '90's early 2000's (pre 9/11).

This terminal was the first hub in the U.S. with cable supported skylights:

Great that they are planning for the future and that OIA has so much land to expand.
Are there any plans for additional runways to be added in conjunction with the South Terminal complex?

Will it connect to Downtown Orlando (light rail, etc)

Back in 1982, when EPCOT was opening, Air France and British Airways coordinated a simultaneous landing of their respective Concord supersonic passenger craft at OIA on two parallel runways. It was the first and only such event in history; it was an historic milestone in aviation. Here's a photo of it:

Cool pic!
Now, over 20 years later we have slower and uglier planes. Some progress.
