Brazil's largest carrier, TAM Airlines, has announced it will start daily service between Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Orlando International Airport in November.
TAM Airlines will use the 215-seat A330-200 aircraft for the service. Airport executives estimate the new service conservatively will have a $108 million annual economic impact on the Orlando area. Lufthansa, Aer Lingus, Copa and British Airways all adding or expanding service in the last year, international passenger traffic is up 23 percent in the last 12 months. here is the artical http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/s...5/daily21.html |

I recently was in MCO, and was in universal (i drive area etc) and i saw so many tourists, and the overwhleming majority seemed to be British and Brazilian. I wonder why Orlando is so popular for them.

Probably currency. Espicially before the global economic issues, it was like £1 to $2. I remember back in 2005, you paid $200 for only £90. I don't know about Brazil, but I expect the same thing.

Orlando's always been big for Brits and Brazilians-- at least for the past 20 years. It's seasonal for the Brazilians.
I was in Chicago this past week. The bottom line is this: Chicago is a great city. Everything to see there is in its downtown or near it. LSD is one of the greatest scenic highways. Within downtown, there's Michigan Ave., State St., Rush, etc... with many nodes of entertainment/retail; Navy Pier, etc... Other than that, a mall is a mall, so people don't come to Chicago to go to the suburbs to shop, unless they're near Gurnee. I've got family in Bucktown, north side near Skokie, Wilmette, etc... For tourists, Orlando has a lot. WDW has 2 major tourist nodes seperate from the parks: Downtown Disney & the Boardwalk. Universal has Citywalk. The City has I-Drive, for better or worse depending on where you go. The tourist corridor also has Prime Outlets, Festival Bay, Premium Outlets, Pointe Orlando, and, slightly offshoot Restaurant Row at Sand Lake Rd. & Dr. Phillips along with the Sea World parks. There's lots of things to see. We all know this, but these are the places that attract tourists. The biggest attraction in downtown Chicago is the Pier, aside from the two observatories and retail. But, downtown itself is an attraction- its built up nicely; its pretty awesome. Downtown Orlando doesn't have that draw- not even per capita-- actually it might per capita. But I think Orlando has a golden opportunity to market downtown and push new developments simultaneously and get the ball rolling there too-- its rolling for locals, but an influx of tourists I think would send things into high gear. |

MCO and MIA are always going to be #1 & 2 in Florida, atleast in the foreseeable future.
MCO is in another league compared to TPA when talking about passenger totals. Sucks to see MCO lost soo much in 2008, MIA on the other hand gained a bit. |

TPA lost some numbers too, the recession being to blame.

as long as they could still hold onto 35M minimum during these tough times, then maybe they can steadily build off of that as things get better. I remember when 9/11 had a huge chilling effect at MCO and traffic dropped gangbusters from one year to the next.
I think one of the reasons MCO is still holding on is b/c Jetblue keeps expanding its routes and adding routes other carriers have recently dropped. |

By the way, I'd thought I'd ask this out of curiosity. One of the things we've been discussing in the Tampa International Airport thread in the Tampa forums, is the Delta/Northwest merger and how it will impact TIA specifically. When I dropped by the terminal earlier today, I noticed that about 35% of Northwest's ticketing space was gone.
How has the transition been going at MCO thus far? Has the Northwest ticketing area over there been reduced as well?

![]() honestly don't know. the last airline I flew over the holidays was United... but I did notice that the same airsides that they both use(d) are being renovated. the last time I took Northwest was about 4 years ago. I do know MCO penciled in a huge overhaul of all of the ticketing counters a year or two ago, so I'm not sure what's vacated or just under renovation. |

The South Terminal expansion was pushed back a few years as was reported a couple of years ago.
Meanwhile, GOAA has gutted and renovated Airside 1 and is now doing the same thing with Airside 3. These are the two original airsides when the terminal first opened. They substantially increased the retail area in Airside 1 and widened one of the three concourses. Not sure which airline has those gates. For Airside 3, they are gutting it good. Renderings show the addition of skylight ceilings to replace the traditional '70's-ish ceiling panel ceilings. Once Airside 3 is done, I think they are going to get ready for the South Terminal expansion. This whole 9-11 thing with expanded security and x-ray checkpoints has really eaten into the available space for those two airsides where the AGT meets the main terminal. They need to do something about that. Airsides 2 & 4, on the Hyatt side, don't have that problem b/c there's like five times as much space on that side. I would probably look at options to add onto the terminal space if at all possible and feasible. |

Allegiant Air is now offering OIA to Knoxville, TN flights (4x/week).
They were up until now exclusively servicing OSI (Orlando-Sanford International). |
