CHENNAI: IBM India Pvt. Ltd. has expanded its operations in Chennai with the inauguration of its new global delivery centre. It will be the sixth such centre in India. The facility is spread across 2.95 lakh sq. ft. at the DLF Park at Manapakkam in Chennai.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, said the company already had two centres in Chennai.

The new centre was an integral part of IBM’s global delivery network, spread across three dozen countries around the world. Initially, it would employ 100 persons and depending on customer utilisation of the centre’s services, the new facility could eventually employ 2,500 people, across application and IT infrastructure services.

Mr. Annswamy said India and China would soon emerge as the two largest global delivery centres in the world. He said the new centre and the team in Chennai would enable IBM to accelerate the development of innovative technology solutions for its clients across the globe. It would ramp up its operations in Chennai by hiring technology graduates and IT professionals with skills in remote infrastructure services, IT strategy and architecture, business consulting, enterprise solutions (SAP, Siebel and Oracle), testing, business intelligence and data warehousing.

The Chennai facility, he said, would also be the first centre in India for IBM to offer IT infrastructure services such as server consolidation, middleware services and site and facilities services.

Mr. Annaswamy said IBM was contemplating to expand its operations into Tier-2 cities in Tamil Nadu.

Already, Coimbatore has a sales office and there was scope for starting delivery operations there.

The Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, A. Raja, who inaugurated the centre, said the expansion of the facility in Chennai would benefit both the State and the company.

CHENNAI: The detailed project report for the proposed metro rail project in the city is likely to be submitted to the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) by the end of next week.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited, which is working on the report, is expected to suggest minor modifications to the original alignment.

The project has been proposed along EVR Periyar Salai (Poonamallee High Road) and Anna Salai.

CHENNAI: Land acquisition for the Outer Ring Road (ORR) project between Old Mahabalipuram Road and the Tiruvottiyur Ponneri Panjetty (TPP) Road is nearing completion.

The acquisition for the nearly 62-kilometre long project, connecting NH-45 at Vandalur and NH-4 at Nazarathpet, was undertaken in two stages. In the first stage, a distance of 29.5 kilometres between NH-45 and Chennai Tiruvallur High (CTH) Road, the acquisition was completed in early 2005.

With the Government according administrative sanction for the second phase between the CTH Road and TPP Road, land acquisition is under way and is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

The six-lane ORR will include a provision for 22-metre-wide corridor for public transport. Land on either side of the project has been earmarked for either road widening or commercial exploitation.

The project cost, estimated at Rs.500 crore two years ago, has now been put at Rs. 850 crore.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority proposed the ORR, along the outer edges of the Chennai Metropolitan Area, to help relieve traffic congestion and enable dispersal of urban growth. The ORR is to be executed on a Build, Operate and Transfer basis.

The Highways Department had proposed the ORR under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and the project was included in the City Development Plan for Chennai submitted to the Centre for approval.

NOW a days more news regarding the OUTER RING ROAD is been seen.i think they will be soon starting the road project atleast within a year or two.But a point regarding the outer ring road is not clear.Since Chennai has developed till keelambakkam in south and similarly in the west also then in late future the only possible area to be developed is south-west and north-west.The OUTER RING ROAD is the only way which initiates the development along these areas .If the road is not allowed to commercially exploit by private instead of goverment taking land along the road ,i think we will not get the maximum benefit from this road.Even in hyderabad the ORR work is started and all the mass development are only based on this road.So,the same must be repeated in chennai instead goverment using the land along the road.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - BASF is expanding its automotive catalyst plants in Shanghai, China, and Chennai, India, to meet growing customer demand over the next few years, the German chemicals group said on Monday.

BASF, which last year acquired U.S. catalyst maker Engelhard for $4.8 billion, said in a statement it would nearly double its manufacturing capacity in Shanghai and triple it in Chennai.

The company did not detail its current capacities.

"Domestic car sales in China and India are expected to grow significantly over the next few years, spurring growth in demand for light-duty automotive catalysts," the company said.

The Shanghai and Chennai expansions are part of its 110 million euro ($149 million) commitment in new capital investments made since BASF Catalysts was established mid-2006.

BASF's Catalysts division, which posted sales of 2.4 billion euros in the first-half, is the world's leading supplier of emission-control and process catalysts.

BASF shares were up 0.6 percent at 93.21 euros at 0806 GMT, compared with 0.3 percent rise in the German DAX index.

The radar is owned by Met Dept which comes under Dept of Earth Sciences which is under DST.

Chennai Airport uses only this radar for all its met needs (in aviation, Met data are very crucial). There is no alternative to this radar at present.

It need not be near the airport but should be able to cover the entire region of Chennai (incl the future expansion). May be the new greenfield airport also.

The weight of the radar seems quite high and so reinforcements may be needed.

A separate structure is ideal but quite costly.

The radar may have been installed in the Chennai port premises earlier to serve both maritime and aviation needs and also as a secured place.

The hill at St. Thomas Mount seems to be a good place, it can serve both Aviation and Meteorology from this location.
