So Taipei 101 had the record for 3 years. That seemed really short to me until I noticed that the WTC had it for 2 years and Chyrsler only 1.

I was trying to answer the question below and explain that the total height was the only goal not met.

Why do all the articles keep saying that BD will surpass Taipei 101 in September? Seems it'll be much earlier than that.

i think it will be longer then that. i cant see anything taller then burjD being completed in 10 years regardless what you might read in papers or internet.
just on its height surpassing 500m mark. it has floors 135, 136, 137 and 138 to go. but im pretty sure only 135 is the last 4m 'typical" floor. the other 3 are 5-6m high and plantlevels, thus taking a bit longer to configure for pouring, thus should extend time. i reckon we are looking at another month before 138 is done? someone correct me if i wrong.
great pix imre
cheers

Personally I don't mind when it will surpass the height of the Taipeh 101, the only thing that matters is that it will do so!
Anyway I think it could take longer than you and others are estimating, because the other "columns" will be raised in the mean-time. Probably I am completely wrong, but I guess the core/main structure rising up to the skies could/would need a bit support in terms of stability - that is what the surrounding structures will do!
Maybe what Culwulla said is also contributing to a slower raise of the building.

Do we think that the news around the world will be broadcasting about the Burj Dubai when it reaches the magic 509m mark or do you think they'll wait until it's externally completed at least? I really hope they do host a special broadcast for it. Surely the BBC will it's a pretty special event.

I doubt they would. Sadly most people in the world don't care about skyscraprrs as people here do.

They will , seeing as this has much broader appeal than just crazed skyscraper aficionados. this is the tallest free standing manmade structure to ever be built in the history of humankind. And it doesnt cheat by using a spire, antenna, pinnacle or any other trick to do so! A solid structure over half a kilometre tall!!

You bet Emmar will be creating a media frenzy to cover this momentous occasion! Besides, its in their best interests, can you imagine how much the demand for the square kilometre that is the Burj Dubai project will increase and how much the price of real-estate will increase along with it!?!?

It will be very interesting to see how Emmar goes about celebrating this...

yes- I also hope they make a big deal about it. it deserves it! the world has so many troubles atm, this brings positives and we should all be proud of emaars achievements and Dubais as well.
Its a new world landmark!! like Eiffel of ESB was in its hey day. it will be 40% taller then any other skyscraper and tallest structure made by man surpassing everything previously.what an achievement!

No Jarenz, I was being facetious.

The tower does in fact climb 1 floor every 3 days when its at full speed. However this rhythm is interrupted by reconfiguration of the core of the Burj Dubai or when this same core reaches a 'mechanical level'.

The mech levels are those dedicated to maintenance, heating, storage, life support, alligators, etc. At these points it can take weeks for the tower to start rising again due to the complexities involved.

Alain Robert

I hope Alain Robert will ascend the Burj Dubai all the way to the top as part of the opening ceremony.
