afterall that it will be tallest man-made structure.
its great how its getting into the 500's now.
Yes - the "free-standing" part is important to highlight - it leaves only the Ostankino and CN Towers. The CN Tower is an amazing thing, having held the record for 32 years!

And even calling floors inhabitable just because they're enclosed with cladding is a stretch.

So BD is taller than the tallest building in the world, but it's not a building yet.

That doesn't mean a thing.

Personally, I think the whole "building, tower" difference is bs though, if it stands up by itself and people can go inside, it should be called a building.

BTW, I love the new CN Tower lights! Looks sweet.

Interestingly, that is precisely how the CN Tower folks see it. From their portal's front page, "The World's Tallest Building 553M (1815FT)"

http://www.cntower.ca/portal/

That sure makes things simple. Of course, the CN Tower will have to concede the title soon enough, but will always remain an icon. Amazing for 1975!!

And the Sears Tower is a freestanding structure, so the Burj has it to beat out before it takes on Ostankino and CN.

Then we can talk about the dozens of masts that are taller than CN.

If you have a floor and you (a human) can stand inside and there is a roof over your head at the tip of CN tower or any structure taller then 101, then you can call your building " the tallest building in the world.

And one more thing, no cheating, there should be a legal floors below it all the way to the ground.

This should be a good criteria to classify a building, all the crown or tip how dome or whatever are all bs man !

Yeah, a person has to have standards, don'cha'no. Anyway, the CN tower is a tower, not a building. IIRC The Stratosphere was supposed to be MUCH taller, something like 2000 feet tall, but the bastards at the airport forced the builders of the Stratosphere to stop short. You can tell the base is way over-built for the current height.

Pic Update

A friend drove me by the Burj Dubai and I got some truly horrendous photos. My camera was not up to the task. The photos are all jumpy. Crap. I got so pissed off I bought a new camera, a Pentax Optio A-30. 10 megapixel, shake control and everything at the Mall of the Emarites. I plan to rent a car today to check out some stuff.

Interesting information on one of my favorite observation towers, Stratosphere.

Supposely Stratosphere is 2,000 feet tall. Would it consider as building or structure? Stratosphere has small buildings on the top with more than six stories.

The Stratosphere is 'only' 350 m or 1,149 ft feet tall. Unfortunately it is just a structure since there are not habitable floors all the way down. Otherwise you could just put a room at the top of a 2000 ft TV tower and call it a building.

Action Shot of Burj Dubai

Here is a nighttime 'Action Shot' of the Burj Dubai. Notice how I moved the camera to get a graceful arching effect with the lights.

i know, its difficult to take a good picture at night, try turning the sensitivity up like ISO1000, otherwise a stand, or just try to keep camera at steady as possible by sitting ect. best of luck to you tho!

Dr. Strangelove-

I just looked up the Pentax Optio A30, and here are my suggestions for shooting the Burj: Manually set the ISO to the lowest setting you can pull of, whether it be 64, 100, or 200. Don't go higher than 200. Set the white balance to daylight if it's sunny, and auto if it's cloudy. Make sure to steady the camera as well as you can. You can use your body as a sort of tripod by wedging your arms up against your sides.

Just some suggestions. I'm sure you don't need them anyway!
