Dr. Strangelove, how the hell did you manage to approach so close the the building?
Or is it because of enormous height, that the camera appears to be so close? I doubt it's a panoramic shot, I can't see any distortions. Hm.
(btw, I see the camera model. not bad. excellent camera, IMO. almost everything I need...)

what about you all? would you live all the way at the top of the building?
Hej ... no so realistic thinkings up to your mind ...

The Emirates Towers used to look very tall and huge before. Today I noticed how small they appear in comparison to the Burj Dubai.

I'm not trying to even roughly estimate what the final height would be, but knowing Dubai's "cool number" craze, I think it's almost definite that the final height will have some kind of numerical pattern at least... 818 sounds fair enough so far.
Thanks! This shot shows the building and the men that are building it going to work:

I just drove onto the construction site like I belonged there. I got as far as the security gate, which is about 100ft (33m?) from the base:

As you can see from the image size this photo has a zoom of zero. I noticed that the camera does have a bit of barrel distortion.

Hello all, My name is Mike from NYC.

Congrats to Dubai and all skyscraper enthusiasts. I have been reading all the posts here since the building was 30 floors tall without writing a post.
without a mention of any names, a special thanks to the people who have devoted their time and effort into taking pictures and keeping this forum up to date for the rest of the world to see.
Wall Street Journal and local newspapers had articles about BD. I'm gonna skip student loan payments for a few months and come visit Dubai sometime upon completion of the tower.

"I just drove onto the construction site like I belonged there."

Perhaps you or Imre could go to the top of the tower like you belong there! security gate? no problem! just pay a worker a few bucks to sit in the front seat, lol.

Despite the inundation of news articles about BD's surge past Taipei 101, I wanted to post this article. The Chicago Tribune is a highly reputable source. And though I don't always agree with its architecture critic, Blair Kamin, he's informed and usually has his facts straight.

Dubai building to tower over rivals
July 24, 2007
By Blair Kamin | Tribune architecture critic

The world appears to have a new tallest building -- the Burj Dubai, a giant mixed-use tower in the United Arab Emirates -- and there are signs that the skyscraper, its height still a closely guarded secret, will soar nearly half a mile or higher into the desert sky.

The tower's architects, Skidmore Owings & Merrill of Chicago, announced Monday that the skyscraper, still under construction, has already reached a height of 1,680 feet, which would put it above the world's tallest building, the 1,667-foot-tall Taipei 101 in Taiwan, the title-holder since 2004.

George Efstathiou, Skidmore's managing partner on the project, said in an interview that the Burj Dubai would be "approximately" as tall as the 1,127-foot John Hancock Center stacked atop the 1,450-foot Sears Tower. That adds up to 2,577 feet -- not far from half a mile, or 2,640 feet.
