it's not pollution, its just hazy, what do you expect from the desert, but in fairness to the dubai municipality, most part of the city is green, they even change the plants depends on the climate.

Sky Tower, do you know what kind of damper it's going to be?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BK-sAqBUwxk

Kind of a neat video... It's been posted in the SWFC thread, but probably not here. The last minute and a half has a killer animation of an active tuned mass damper in the SWFC.

Actually, I'm really not sure. I hope so....that'd be so cool.

$20,000,000 sounds like a lot of money for a giant lump of steel plates attatched to a pendulum like in T101.

The SWFC one looks like the one I'd like to have in my Burj Dubai Tower please Mr Tuned Mass Damper Designer?

It'll take more than a few SCUD missiles to stop me Imre!

However, I can stop Vanhenrik with just a push of the button.....again!

Anyway....look what I can do.....

Was mass damper considered in the original design? The one for Taipe101 weighs 800t, so if BD did not consider in original design and decide to have one now then it's a major re-design...

thanks for the pic

whats the name of the carrier?

so Dubai is 100% under US control. Is that also the reason, why most construction is given to US firms(Halcrow, Halliburton, SOM, KPF), or do you have the impression, that the rest of the world has an equal chance of getting a job?

Is the US-presence essential to secure the growht and success of dubai?

The pressence of a U.S. a/c Carriers doesn't have to be a sign that Dubai is under "us control", it's more a sign that some companies in Dubai are doing business with the us-navy for supplies of fuel and stores.

And as for the business in general. This Burj Dubai is constructed by an belgian firm. So i think that there are more ore less equal oppertunities for companies in Dubai.

The foundations were designed to hold a load equivalent to 3.8 million tons....I'm sure it won't be a problem.

Erm..... .....No!

Yes, each pile was tested to 19,500kN with a 25 ton weight hammered into it from a height of 1.6m concluded compression stresses less than 21MPa and tension stresses no less than 3.42MPa.

Peak forces encountered during this process was 213.67kN/m

So I make 192 skin friction piles that test to at least 195,000kN

= 37,440,000kN which equates to 3,817,816 Metric Tons

The dumpers first planned were to be water tanks installed on the roof of the last concrete floor and a couple of floors above it on the steel part.

Forget the scud but look at the left of the first picture and see how HUGE is Sheikh Mohammed's new toy (compare it with the size of the aircarrier).

19500kN? that is ... 2x Working Load? or Ultimate Pile Test? and what about its diameter and depth? btw, what's that 195,000kN figure for? and why all the rebar in the piles and raft should be epoxy coated?

btw do u know the DMSL at Burj Dubai?

Uhm ... then why are they wanna put a TMD now? piles could take the load i believe as its safety factor shld be quite high .. but the column/slab? or is it gonna be inside the core wall area? if inside the corewall then still ok...

btw, the TMD, is it gonna be like a pendulum? or like the SWFC ?

Looks like #74. So that would make it the U.S.S. John C Stennis

F-16s are an Air Force jet. You must mean F/A-18 if it came from the carrier.
