You might want to reopen the Al-Burj thread (for the Nakheel project). Latest news out of Dubai is that it is going to peak at 1,050 metres - 850m main structure and 200m spire.

Sorry about that...one of my staff thought it would be funny to post that....obviously I'm not...but they think it's hilariously funny as they're the ones who took the call yesterday before they got my cell phone number.

I was asked to take it off....not ordered!

Spandex, mine is on the 59th floor by the way....just above. (Doha wing on the side facing Old Town)

Well atleast try. pretty please
English is a very difficult language to master and I CAN understand his writings just fine. I enjoyed reading his post. At least I don't put apostropie's in my plural's like lots of other 'native born' English speakers around here do.

I agree Mike aka mgk920.

vanhenrik contributes a lot. I understand him perfectly and English is obviously his 2nd language. So give him a break in regard to his English chris_underscore47.

*Waits for either Imre or Atlin's futher construction pic updates on this history making scraper!*

Can you provide any reference links?

They closed it because we got bored and started wondering what the views would be like from 1200 meters.

And how long it would take to spatter the ground if you jumped off the top...
I'm not exactly sure my terminal velocity calculations are correct but I took a shot at the numbers.

It might be a good idea to just remove the thread and open a new one once news starts coming out.

Cheers,

-Tom

About those elevators; do most of them go from ground to somewhere near the top or will they have a terminus in the middle somewhere from which other lifts will go to the top? I know double decker lifts move a lot more people but I still think a sky lobby would be a tad more convenient?

And on a note about English: look back to ZZ-II and Altin and Imre's earliest posts and their English spelling proficiency has increased dramatically over the course of their respective thousands of posts on here (though they didn't start too badly to begin with).

I did some terminal velocity calculations some years ago. Here are the numbers I remember:

Terminal velocity: 200 km/h aprox
You reach terminal velocity in aprox 7 seconds covering 200 meters.

For the ones who donīt know what is terminal velocity...is the speed in wich the force of aceleration that gravity ejerces equals the force of the air over your body trying to stop it. In others words, just after you jump, you will be acelerating until you reach the terminal velocity, and then you keep falling at the same speed (terminal velocity).
It have some similaritys with the max speed of a car. When the force of the engine equals the force of recistance of the air (including mechanicals friction)

So... if you jump from the top of Burj Dubai (818 m), you "touch" the ground at 200 km/h after flying 18 seconds...

Bugger, I had a calculation of 2.3 seconds.. But I did note it would depend on how compact you were flying. A dive would get you to the ground quicker then arms and legs outreached correct? my rough calculations had a compact body jumping from 1200 meters reaching the ground in 23 seconds.

a(t) = 9.8
v(t) = 9.8
Terminal velocity is 53 m/s,
53 = 9.8t
t = 2.3s

We may want to drop the subject before this thread gets closed.

Impossible. Without friction we have
a(t) = 9.81 m/s^2
v(t) = S a(t) dt = 9.81t m/s
y(t) = S v(t) dt = 9.81/2*t^2 m

for y=808 m we find t=12.8 seconds and v=126 m/s = 453 km/h

So yes, with friction it's more like 20 seconds... imagine falling and count 20 seconds, it's incredibly long !

Yes, it is a really long time.

Does anyone know what the bar is one floor below the setback, and why they aren't cladding around it?

That bar is the cladding installation monorail.
It needs to be removed before they can clad the next bit....I imagine it may like this for some time yet!
