In order to see something from a distance, both dimensions have to be big enough. The shadow would be long enough in the afternoon to see it from space, but not wide enough and probably not bright enough either (by bright I mean difference in brightness from surroundings). You can see things the size of a large sports arena from space if they are bright (like with a white roof). You should be able to see the Burj Dubai from a low orbit with binoculars, just by merit of being a large building. You could easily see all three palm islands even from a high orbit (like the space station) with the naked eye.

I always wanted to know...how do they attach the wings of burj dubai to its core? It seems like they are separate structures. I never saw any steel joints jutting out of the core to which the wings could be attached.

Does anyone know more about how Burj Dubai is constructed or where I can find that information?
