From a tallest free-standing structure perspective, the Egyptians were wayyyy ahead for a period of ~3,500 years. Of course, tallest free-standing is not a measure the Chicago folks like, as that city has never actually held that title.

Wow that would be quite a list, lot of cathedrals I'd imagine then some NY skyscrapers then CN... I'm sure there are some other things in between as well though I can't think of any right now.
