you better calm down a bit! when a poll is a waste of time for you simply don't vote or visit that thread!!

and: only a few months since Suptertall was introduced?. not really guy, the word supertall for buildings over 300m is really old. since i'm interested in skyscrapers i use this word, and that are almost 10 years.

Carbon-fibre & composites are very very expensive.

The collective IQ of this forum was never... ahem... exactly chart-busting, but this thread has managed to secure its (the forum) place in the "all I care about is length, not girth" inane discussion hall 'o fame.

I'm not being a pessimist or anything but despite al those neat skyscraper proposals of exceptionally tall buildings back in the 80s and early 90s (shown on Discovery shows and the like), to actually have before us a building that is 150 floors is just astounding! I don't know how many people watched the old World Wide Plaza 5-part skyscraper special on NOVA back in the day or were fans of the Towering Inferno but when you thought "ahead" (past year 2,000), it was easy to think sure, 120 floors, 140 floors would be max.

It's amazing to see despite all that's happened not only in the US but across the world in the 15 years since that the boom's actually not died out but increased - obviously showchased by far flung places like Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Mecca, Moscow, etc. - not just the United States, choosing to build tall.

I don't know if this is the same for everyone on this forum but BD is amazing in accomplishing things that at least for me, I had thought would only be done *maybe* near the end of my life or you know, the year 2080 or something far out there. Not now in 2007!

Simply amazing. Now to just arrange my finances to possibly be there for the opening party / weekend or something ^_~.

Should we start a new thread once BD has reach the world tallest free-standing structure status?

I feel its worth it, and this old thread has become almost 7K post, its just so troublesome to search and refer to some of the useful diagram here (Over 300 pages of thread! How to find?).

What are the prices compared to steel for those materials?

i hope they test the new nanotube technology on the burj, and that it becomes the starting point for new structures eg. as steel wasin the 1900's

Don't know the exact price (around £15-30/kg), but I do know that when it is used, its normally only for smaller intense projects (i.e. race cars, bullet-proof vests), or for certain (smaller) components of space shuttles & large aircrafts due to its extraordinary weight-strength ratio. I think it would be an over-kill for Burj Dubai, unless the air/wind pressure up there is extreme.
Its uncommon in use because of the price factor.

Thanks, that's indeed a very expensive material. But it also weights a lot less then steel and as it is 10 to 1000 times stronger than the strongest steel (500 kN/mm2 instead of 500 N/mm2) you don't need much.
