We're skyscraper geeks, it's what we do. Personally i don't see any real resemblance to the illinois at all, apart from the fact that its tall and slender, the shape is entirely different. The Illinois would have had a few setbacks, from an essentially square base, this has lots of setbacks and the floorplan is more like a clover leaf.

BTW if anyone does fancy looking back over the last 20 parts of the Burj Dubai thread, can they verify that i was the first to predict a half mile final height, it's looking more and more likely!

2010 for the main tower. Mall will be open by then, as well as the entire old town and a good few other towers as well. But look at the amount of towers there, some plots are sold to private developers (like Damac) as well and they really can take their time. Try 2015

Those pics are excellent.

To think that the Burj Lake Hotel will be 306m (to spire). That's almost the same height as Sydney Tower (309m). Makes things look so small in comparison to Burj Dubai.

I think it would be an over-kill for Burj Dubai, unless the air/wind pressure up there is extreme.
Its uncommon in use because of the price factor.
The majority of the new 787 Dreamliner will be carbon composite, about 50% by weight and 80% by volume (off the top of my head).

Carbon would not be very good for structural elements in buildings, my knowledge of the material is limited but from what I have read, it's strength is mostly in tension rather than compression (not good for most parts of a building) and it is less stiff than either steel or concrete, which is not good for buildings such as burj with high wind loadings.

The Burj Dubai complex looks amazing. It seems like they're working a lot in the lake 'cause I see like a blue color in one of the pictures.

Yeah, carbon is still in its infancy but i am hoping it will be develop to be used for future skyscrapers. The biggest advantage of carbon against steel is it doesn't corrode, the ability to heal itself and its very abundant. That will truly be new evolution of civil engineering once it is developed.
