I think we should pool together and buy Imre a helicopter for Christmas - I want an up to date overhead shot.

Massive! But it's getting so thin! I can't imagine what will it look like when it's finished, it'll probably look like it will easily fall down with the wind
But it's great!

I highly doubt that the level 124 observation deck would be free. You'd have everyone and their dog going up, and remember that in Dubai they like to keep the 'castes' separate - poorer people rarely mix with the more affluent. Even entering the main floor lobby at the Burj al Arab costs money to maintain the separation.

Level 124 has the major advantage of allowing for a significant outdoor observation area. Also, observation levels higher up would have significant impact on the elevator design and general building bandwidth.

Burj Alam which has recently started not far from burj Dubai will have a view deck on roof at 447m.(same as CN Towers)
Burj Dubais will be 442m BUT will also have outdoor observation which i dont think any of these will have?
CN Tower also has an outdoor observation area (if I'm not mistaken) but it is on a lower level. Another thing that the CN tower has, that BD does NOT have (and really can't have) is an area with a glass floor. You can walk on this thing! The nature of that structure allows for that.

The skybridge in the SWFC will be VERY cool!

Also of note (though not for height) - the bridge at the Petronas Towers is also very cool in that it provides an excellent vantage of the buildings themselves, whereas most observation decks by their nature do not do that.

But keep in mind what it is competing against at these heights - towers and masts! Certainly it is more significant than those! Also, with the way it is being constructed (wings coming up behind the core) the overall proportions aren't there till all elements catch up.

Desirables and Undesirables in Dubai

I recently read an interesting article about all the construction going on in Dubai. Apparently compromises are being made to accomodate some of the African and Asian workers who are building the towers - such as time off during the hottest hours of the day and Christian churches built so that the workers from non-Muslim countries can worship. The article also noted that certain groups were not welcome in Dubai: amongst others, Jews, Buddhists, and gay people. Of the first group it said that anyone carrying an Israeli passport is forbidden entry, but also anyone carrying a passport of any country - say the U.S., the U.K., Brazil, Ghana, or Korea - that has an Israeli Visa or tourist stamp or anything will be denied entry into Dubai. If you have a Jewish sounding name (like such common Germanic names like Gross, Klein, Rosenberg, or Silber) even if you are not Jewish it is suggested you bring identifaction papers stating you a Christian, like a church membership. It might help to wear a cross. Buddhists are regarded as idolators and if you are Buddhists it is suggested you do not wear any religious jewelry or anything that will identify your religion. This will be hard for Thai people who so love to wear their Buddha amulets around their necks. Finally, if you are gay, it is best if you just stay away. You are regarded as a criminal ... remember this is not Amsterdam or Paris or New York or San Francisco or Rio or Bangkok.
