@downtownVital.org thats how Aerial restrictions work on Manhatten in New York.
In contrast to Chicago, where the Towers can go thik and boxy up to the top.

They made that zoning law in the 30`s in NY, to keep the sunlight coming down to the streets. You can see that very fine, when you walk down fifth avenue..the towers become slimer to the top...

But well, in Dubai, you dont have a problem with sunlight, the sun is standing much steeper than in European or Noth american cities like NY, so I guess it would be even better if towers would stand close together, to keep them from overheating, as a result of the sunshine through the glass facade.....

And no one says, how far you have to be able to look in your appartment.
I calculated 11 Burj Dubais per square kilomter to get 20 mio people on 290 km˛. I wonder how you want to do that with slabs?

its currently 126fl or 452m. this is also the official figure on burjdubai & emaar websites.
you can add a couple more floors and 15m if you want figure from base.

You can also fill up a helicopter with diesel, but that doesn't mean that you should To me it seems the most logical to follow the floor numbering that is painted on the structure....

Pretty sure Chicago has the same (or similar) zoning restrictions. Can we get a confirmation from someone? Bueller?

Was that a bad Ben Stein joke, or is there actually someone called Bueller on here?

Also, I'm curious, is it normal for construction cranes to wobble? I was at the top of Columbus's glorious tallest tower today (191m), and I was watching this construction crane nearby wave back and forth, and it was making me nervous.

was it pivoting on its base or wobbling?

pivoting = good

wobbling = very bad

The reason they allow it to pivot is it acts as a sail in the wind. If it were left fixed, the stress the wind would impose on the supporting structure of the crane would in fact be to much for it to handle and topple the crane. From what I know there have been several cases where this has happened around the world.

I suppose it was pivoting. I mean, it was moving a lot, so it would have been pretty obvious to whoever was in it. But they were going about their business normally.

Thanks for the speedy response.

Wow that is a good cladding. The reflections are straight, unlike Trump Chicago the reflections are wavey

I wonder who is the glass supplier???

Maybe they accidently dropped the cladding panels off and have to re-order it and will take another few months to arrive Dubai and get it done?

So, malec is asking :

Explain how Paris would be unlivable if you increased the number of stories by 2 (OK 3 was a bit much maybe).

This might not be the case everywhere but, if you consider belows, it is clearly problematic :

Current Paris was built under precise rules, like the number of degrees for a given street size.

About the the overal rules we get :
Sorry for this rather coarse message, wanted to develop and had to go away

Will just open a thread somewhere else I guess. In the above formula C is the girth of the building, 2C for towers, n the number of floors, h the heigth of a floor and "e" a spacing parameter, typically 1 gives 45° from top of one building base of the other.

Db gives the density for a slab base urbanism

Dcd for a court yards buildings one

and Dt for a tower based one

It was bad enough this thread got hijacked for a discussion of urban planning, but now we've got Trump Tower thrown into the mix.
Trump is a good building with great cladding, but why not just link to the appropriate pic in the Trump thread?
