And Rose tower to the right. Not a bad view: Index and Rose Rotana on the sides and Burj Dubai in the middle...

ZZ-II - Go here http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=477355 and you've got to be more precise than 800m+

Imre - Great update as always

Joobn - Best vantage point to see history rising. (Any chance of an Index update )

Well,, I hear this giant tower is constructed by Samsung, a Korean construction company.

Is it safe?
I have to say Korean companies' construction skills/technologies are immature and many of the buildings made by them are either collapsing or showing severe defects after some years.

Tower 2 of Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia was also constructed by Samsung.

While Tower 1, constructed by Japanese construction company Hazama,
is fully occupied by tenants,
Tower 2 is almost empty until today.

This is due to scandals reported by Malaysian newspapers that
Tower 2, constructed by Samsung, is so defective that they are reclining a few inches off the vertical. Any Malaysian living in Kuala Lumpur knows about this fact.

The left is Tower 1 by Japanese construction company Hazama,
and the right, almost empty, is Tower 2 by Korean construction company Samsung.

I hope Burj Dubai will not recline and fall down after some years.

a few inches off vertical is accepted normal.
no building is perfectly plumb.
that's all just a bunch of the usual media hype.

The church tower in my village is 10cm out of plumb at the top (its only 30m high) but it is still standing Not to mention the leaning tower of Pisa. Few centimeters on a structure a size of BD is nothing.

A department store in Seoul, constructed in 1989,
suddenly collapsed in 1995 and 502 people were killed and 937 injured.

(before collapse)

(After collapse)

So, I don't believe Korean companies will be able to make a safe and sustainable building in Dubai, in my opinion.

I know nothing about that specific disaster, but I can assure you the blame goes far deeper than the construction company. For something like that to happen, you have to have failures with the design, engineering, inspections, etc. If the building was built in 1989 to such crappy standards, the Korean inspectors had to have very low standards, or were simply looking the other way.

the shopping mall collapsed due to the upper floors not being properly secured but the second attachment to the side walls (kinda like forgetting to put some pegs onto the clothes line. also, it is due to the mechanical level, the air conditioning units were all placed in central, and the floors not built to handle that stress under one point, they were supposed to be closer to side walls. the mechanical level collapsed bringing down the other levels with in (saw it on discovery few years back)
