Yes, you are absolutely right, I didn't think of that from the start, because Dynamo Kyiv already has a stadium, but it's not very impressive

And thanks, hope that next time it will be Croatia

ok, so the Gdansk soccer team isn't good and maybe doesn't deserve that impressive of a stadium, but the design is really creative and its true to the city with the impressive amber like design.

I think the stadiums should be made to look more modern and expanded b/c we are showcasing our country to the world, and its precisely events such as these that change peoples opinions about Poland. Living in Canada I know what ppl think of Eastern Europe and how they view life filled with smoke stacks and gray commie blocks on the horizon. Just a few days ago when I showed some ppl the designs of the stadiums and the commercial about the Baltic Arena they were suprized how modern everything was. We need to go out of our way to better market our country and change the image ppl have of Poland.

Welcome to Donetsk my friend!

Well, the new stadium will really stand out, hopefully new projects in Donetsk will transform its image, but it is heavy industry that drives this region's economic development and I don't suppose that much will be done to reduce this trend. Maybe for Euro 2012, some industries will receive a makeover, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Shahtar stadium: news
Interview

When a group of journalist from almost all regions of Ukraine came to Donetsk, they were taken to the building site of the new Shakhtar stadium where they were met by the Stadium Shakhtyor Ltd general Director Volodymyr Kovalevskyy who answered their questions concerning the new arena.

- When the stadium is due to be ready and what the arena will look like?

- We started to build it in June 2006. The Turkish company ENKA is the general contractor. The arena is due to be ready by May 2008. The stadium's seating capacity will be 50000 and it will be a UEFA five-star stadium. As you know, Poland and Ukraine will host EURO 2012 and semi-finals will be played here, at this arena. This is gonna be a purely football arena. But at the same time, it's design allows to convert it into a concert hall to hold rock performances as well as opera, different athletic competitions can be held also. In that case the pitch will be transformed.

- Does it mean there will be a racetrack?

- No, there. I repeat once again that it will be a football arena. Distance to the pitch on the East and West will be 6 meters, on the North and South - 9.
All stands will be protected by the roof; the pitch won't, because we want to create better conditions for the grass. We shall have a natural grass pitch.

- Could you name the investor, and how much does the whole project costs?

- They are System Capital Management. The project is worth $250mln.

- Who's the landowner?

- We have rented about 20 hectares of land for 49 years.

- Who has designed the arena?

- A British company Arup-Sport. They are widely known for their project in Peking - a stadium with seating capacity of 100000. The stadium will be the main arena hosting Olympic Games 2008. All in all they have designed more then 30 top-class stadiums around the globe.

- How many people are working on the building site?

- Today, there are 927 workers. In june, when the building process will be in full swing, there will be 1400.

- Are they all Turkish workers?

- Perhaps two thirds of them are Turkish, the rest are Ukrainians.

- What will be the name of the stadium?

- No, not yet. We are considering two variants, but i can't tell you them because we don't want to have difficulties with the patent agency.

- Do you often discuss business matters with Rinat Akhmetov?

- I do not report directly to him. At the end of every week I pass the report to the FC Shakhtar CEO, Sergiy Palkin, who in his turn inform the President.

- When you were still designing the project were you keeping in mind it would host EURO-2012?

- EURO 2012 is a good news, but we are building this stadium for Shakhtar football club, and its fans. So that the team could play and the fans support them at a comfortable stadium. We want to create a special atmosphere - when you are watching a game and you feel a shiver. It's such a great experience and it is quite different from the one that you get lying on a couch with a beer can in your hand at home, in front of a TV-set.

- Aren't you afraid that you would have to reconstruct the stadium before the EURO 2012 competitions?

- What are you talkin' about! Perhaps we shall have to install a new pitch - in case it will be in bad state in five years.

- Have UEFA experts already visited the stadium?

- No. There is still nothing we could show them. They will certainly come when the concrete walls are ready and we'll need some advices concerning the interior of the stadium - where the dressing rooms will be, room for medics, etc. But we have already met UEFA representatives, we showed them the project and they said it was okay.

- Do you think 50000 seats will be enough for a city like Donetsk?

- As for today - it is more than enough. Well, sure, it may seem it is not enough for the Champions League final. Or, say, matches against Dynamo are always sold out and there is never enough seats. But there are another Championship matches - against Vorskla, or Stal, when average attendance is 15- 25 thousand. Empty stadiums look ugly, if you want example - go to Kyiv and have a look. But I do believe that there are many true fans in Donetsk and the attendance will increase. People will find it delightful to come to such stadium like ours. And it will always be full.

- Will Olympiyskiy still be operating?

- Yes, i think so. Football in Donetsk is becoming more and more popular with every day. Why loosing a good stadium?

It is also the only Polish stadium which was to be finished 'with or without' EURO bid win.

I really like the Poznan project - it's not as great as Donieck or Gdansk, but come on - not every stadium has to be as You said "show-off stadium".

The project was changed a bit - it will have a roof and I think it looks really good.

Here's a video :

article in polish but in shortcut:
PKP Intercity (PKP - Polish State Railways) want to transport fans on Euro 2012 in very fast trains. They plan to buy 20 TGV trains. They dreamed about this investment from a long time, but there wasn't any money for this and railway tracks wasn't adapted for large speeds. They change this after decision about Euro 2012. Trains will cost around 380 milions euro. President of PKP Intercity said today in TVN24, that railway tracks will be modernized and trains could speed then with 250 km/h (now trains on polish railway tracks could speed with max. 160 km/h).

PKP Intercity wyda 1,5 mld na TGV
(Puls Biznesu/04.05.2007, godz. 06:29)

i found an article in english

PKP Intercity railways to spend PLN 1.5 billion to buy TGV

(ostatnia modyfikacja:11:03, 04-05-2007)
PKP Intercity wants to transport its passengers with TGV trains running over 200km/h. The railway company wants to buy 20 trains.
Reklama

After Poland was granted the rights to organize European football championships, PKP Intercity decided to buy TGV trains faster than planned before. “We have decided to buy 20 trains within 2-3 years”, Czeslaw Warsewicz, PKP IC CEO.

The feasibility study of the project is being conducted already. According to initial estimates, 20 trains will cost EUR 380m, or PLN 1.5 billion. The project will be financed fifty-fifty from the company’s own funds and EU funds.

PKP IC wants to get funds from EU transport program for the years 2007-2013. The company has its own fund. Last year, it had PLN 32m of net income. This year should be similar with record first quarter results - for the first time in history, the company had net income in the first quarter which is traditionally very difficult for railways. Besides, the company can borrow money.

“We can get PLN 200m even today”, Czeslaw Warsewicz assured.

According to initial itinerary, first TGV trains would start operations in Poland in 2010-2011. The problem is that the railway infrastructure is too old in some parts to go faster then 160km/h, and there are sections where trains have to slow down to several dozens km/h. It is up to PKP Polskie Koleje Liniowe, the company responsible for the railway infrastructure, whether TGV trains will be able to go fast in Poland.

So will all the Polish cities hosting the EURO have TGV connections?

Poznan is planning to rebuild Main Train Station and combine it with Bus Station.
There is a plan to create separate platform for TGV, though I do not believe that it could run @200kph. there is only one route where 200kph is a design speed. The rest of tracks has top speed of max 160kph, and redesigning it into faster is very unlikely

Kharkiv, which is a Ukrainian reserve city, has presented its plans on modernization of the existing stadium, which they will implement regardless of having the privilege to host some of the Euro 2012 matches or not.

It's already in process of implementation, I'll provide pictures when they are available.

It will have a capacity of 40,000

The athletic tracks will be the only reminder that this is an old stadium

This is where the ticket will be sold

Notice the proximity to the subway station

And the video clip

Found two pics. Apparently the reconstruction is going faster than I thought.

The capacity, to be precise, will be 41,111.

P.S. looks like Ukraine will be ready for Euro-2012 in terms of stadiums in 2 years
