They didnt complete the Quaraoun dam. The superstructure is done but not all the electrical generating plans and also the irrigation wasn't completed....A spillway of 6503 meters carries the water to the underground station where generators produce a maximum of 185 megawatts of electricity, the largest hydroelectric project in Lebanon.

The dam was intended eventually to provide irrigation for 310 kmē of farmland in South Lebanon and 80 kmē in the Beqaa Valley. Instead of the water being distributed for irrigation etc...they release it back and out to sea...

The Green Plan, which is a public authority established in 1963 responsible for the development of water reservoirs, and the private sector, have already developed hundreds of small earth and concrete storage pounds, with a maximum per unit capacity of 0.2 million m3. During the period 1964-1992 the Green Plan led to a total of 3.5 million m3 of earth pounds and 0.35 million m3 of concrete pounds.

The Litani River Authority implemented three hillside stock ponds in the early 1970s for a total storage capacity of about 1.8 million m3.

They are reactivating it....It was on hold after the war because of Isreali occupation and subsequent events. Once complete the country will be transformed.....Its major...and some countries do not want it to happen...Especially the dams that affect the flow into Syria and Turkey..ie Orontes river: the two major ones that are next:

-The Bisri dam on the Awali river is currently at the final design stage for a storage capacity of 128 million m3 and is intended mainly for supplying water to Greater Beirut via the conveyur 800 plan

-The Kardalé dam on the middle reach of the Litani river, also to give a storage capacity of 128 million m3, has been postponed at the preliminary design stage, in view of the prevailing adverse security situation in the southern border region. It actually was started and stopped.

The effect of reducing the flow of freshwater into the Med is something I've been wondering about. The Mediterranean's waters are exchanged very slowly. It gets water from the Nile, but I can't think of any other major river that flows into it. The exchange via Gibraltar must be very limited. So as pollution is dumped into the sea, and the flow from the little rivers out of Lebanon and elsewhere is diverted, what will the effect be on the sea's salinity and water quality? Anyone know of any studies on the subject?

On the other hand, the dams might have an interesting effect (or might not!) in creating microclimates in the mountains. Little pockets of humidity and coolness. I wonder...
