Whitworth/ Princess St - West/Simpson scheme

I'm starting a new thread about this because
a) the other was getting to nearly 500
b) construction is starting
c) i fucking hated the title of the last thread about it!

I secretly hated the title also, but I also hate the fact that you've effectively junked my photograph. I had to get up early to take that! And endure the stares of the workmen!

Aside from the van, that view could be 1907 not 2007. Just a great collection of buildings. Soak it up cos it'll soon be gone.

Yes but thats the point - we arent in 1907. We need a building on that site more than we need that view IMO.

In 1907, there would have been four buildings closely packed on this site - 6 stories along the canalside - rising to 8 stories facing Whitworth street. The new buildings will provide a bit more public realm, and will rise a little higher to the East - but essentially restore the urban grain to the way it was intended to be.

The main change will be the shockingly different aesthetic of the new buildings. But with Whitworth Street and Princess Street being gorgeously Victorian / Edwardian / just plain old, the inconsonance this creates will be, um, boss. I like that it doesn't fit in, and that when you see it for the first time you'll be forced to reconsider what you think of the area.

Cheers. Needed a new thread.

Think this will have quite a big impact on the area. How tall is the tallest building?
