Quinlan appoints new Jurys Inns chairman
10:22 | 10.04.08

Irish private equity company Quinlan Private has appointed Barbara Cassani as chairman of its budget hotel business Jurys Inns.

By Deirdre Hipwell

Cassani, who assumes the role with immediate effect, will work with Quinlan Private and the Jurys Inns management team to drive the growth and development of the Jurys Inns brand across Europe.

Go-fly

She is best known as founder and chief executive officer of Go-Fly, the European low cost airline founded with capital from British Airways and sold to Easyjet in 2002 for £374m, and was also the first chairman of the successful 2012 London Olympics committee. Cassani’s early career was as a consultant for Coopers & Lybrand, followed by 10 years at British Airways.

Quinlan Private said Cassani has a track record of ‘developing fast-growing businesses profitably and has extensive experience in the budget travel sector’. She has been a non-executive chairman of Barcelona-based low cost airline Vueling and a partner of 3x + Y Ventures, a firm set up to identify acquisition and start-up opportunities in the UK travel, restaurant and hotel industries.

'Exciting growth opportunities'

Jurys Inns, formerly a division of the Jurys Doyle Hotel Group, was bought in June 2007 by Quinlan Private. It currently has 22 three star budget hotels in city centre locations throughout Ireland and the UK with a total of 4,835 rooms. There are also 10 hotels in construction in the UK and a significant pipeline of sites in diligence in the UK and in Central and Eastern Europe....

Would Jury's Inn really consider opening a new hotel in Birmingham when they already have the city centre's largest which was refurbished 9 years ago? Hmm, maybe they're gunna do a more extensive redevelopment of the site?

Possibly - I would have thought Marriott, Holiday Inn and HI Express might be looking at another site too - there's plenty of demand.

Would you pay £80 a night for a 3-star hotel in Birmingham?

Moscow has emerged as the most expensive hotel city in the world, while rates in Birmingham are the highest in the UK.

Analysis of overnight prices in three-star hotels in key world cities by online booking service hotel.info shows that the average overnight stay in Moscow costs £125 and is often more expensive than the average rate in other world metropolises.

A comparison of British cities with more than 220,000 inhabitants saw Birmingham come out as the most expensive, although still £45 cheaper than Moscow.

England’s second largest city with £80 compares unfavourably with Edinburgh (£76), Leicester (£75), Liverpool (£73), Kingston upon Hull and Leeds (£70 each).

Eh? Why does it 'compare unfavourably'?

TravelMole have just answered their own question with the statement, 'England’s second largest city...' then goes on to compare with Leicester, Kingston-upon-Hull etc
Are they trying to be intentionally obtuse?

Early Easter blamed for UK hotels slowdown

Many UK hotels suffered drops in both occupancy and room rate in March, blamed on an early Easter and poor spring weather.

Monthly figures released by PKF Hotel Consultancy Services show that London was one of the only cities in the survey that saw a small increase in room rate, rising 0.6% from £124.13 to £124.87

Birmingham and Edinburgh both achieved strong 3.4% increases in room rate in March, but occupancy figures slid.

In Birmingham, occupancy dropped 12.4% from 76.7% in 2007 to 67.3% in 2008, resulting in a 9.4% decline in rooms yield

Birmingham hotels see fall in revenue per room
May 8 2008

Birmingham's hotel industry witnessed a fall in revenue per available room (revPAR) during the first quarter of 2008, according to new research from accountants Deloitte.

But average room rates are up and there is hope that it could buck the current troubled economic conditions.

In the first three months of the year, Birmingham's revPAR dropped by 5.8 per cent to £50. The biggest fall was in Reading, where revPAR fell by 13.7 per cent to £46.

In Nottingham – which has consistently come bottom of the hotel performance league tables – revPAR is the lowest in the country at just £33, following a 4.2 per cent slump.

Not surprisingly, London has the highest revPAR at £95. This was primarily driven by a five per cent increase in average room rates, which remain the highest in the UK at £124. The average room rate in Birmingham is £74, an increase of £2 since the last quarter.

According to Deloitte's HotelBenchmark Survey, the historic city of Bath boasts the highest average room rate outside the capital at £86. Despite occupancy dipping slightly, average room rates have increased £5 over the first quarter last year.

Hotels in Liverpool are benefiting from the city being the European Capital of Culture 2008, with a host of festivals and events attracting more tourists. For the first quarter of 2008, revPAR in the city rose 8.4 per cent, driven by increases in both occupancy and average room rates. Other cities across the UK performing well include Belfast, Hull and Inverness.

Alistair Pritchard, director responsible for Deloitte's tourism, hospitality and leisure sector in the Midlands, said: "Overall, the first quarter of 2008 has been a positive one for the UK's hotel industry.

"Although growth is showing signs of slowing, the fact that there has been room rate growth is a big plus for hoteliers given the current economic conditions.

"In such times, travel, hotel, training and entertainment budgets have traditionally been the first to be squeezed. In light of this, the remainder of 2008 looks challenging as businesses tighten their belts.

"In Birmingham, the signs are hopefully a little more positive. The city has just hosted the Labour Party spring conference, which attracted more than 4,000 delegates to the city, and later in the year we will be welcoming the Conservative Party annual conference, which again will boost visitor numbers in Birmingham.

"This, plus other key events throughout the year, should help to keep the city's hotel sector on a sound footing."

Does the Post ever report these things when news breaks or reports are published? Seems often when I read an article it has bits from another source from a day, week even month prior.

I think they save it for a day when they have little to report so they can bulk it up a bit.

Yeah, common practice. They will have a file full of 'fillers' or 'features'.

NEC Staff moved from NEC House last autumn. The renovation work is well underway. Gate 4 has been demolished.

From Hotel Briefing.
A 164-bedroom Ramada Encore is planned for the NEC (National Exhibition Centre) in Birmingham. The hotel, on the site of the NEC offices, is expected to open in 2008. NEC employees currently based at NEC House on Bickenhill Lane will move 'above the shop' to new offices within the exhibition complex itself.

Ramada Encore Hotels features bright, innovative and contemporary bedroom accommodation with plenty of work space and well-equipped bathrooms. They also feature "The Hub", an informal public area with a coffee shop and bar.

Hilton to open 30 hotels in five years
14:43 | 11.06.08
By Laura Chesters

Hilton Hotels has signed a development agreement with hotel developer HLH Property and will open 30 hotels in the UK.

The pair plan to open 30 hotels comprising around 4,000 rooms in the next five years.

The openings will be mainly Hampton by Hilton hotels - Hilton's economy brand.

Hilton has already agreed alliances with Shiva and Somerston, representing a total of 40 hotels in the UK in recent months.

Separate to the HLH deal, Hilton currently has 13 new hotel sites being developed across its brands in the UK and expects to add more shortly.

Isn't there a Hampton by Hilton opening on Constitution Hill next door to the Metro station?
