Just to give a flavour of how Birmingham hotels are booming:
Planning granted for: Snow Hill, Broad St Tower, Norfolk House (Hagley Road) Planning in for: Travelodge JQ, Constitution Hill, St Georges x 2 I am sure there are a few others.

Well, Eastside has the rumoured 5* hotel at venture east - I suspect the one at V.T.P will be of very reasonable calibre. Hotel is also planned for the Uni site behind Baskerville House which was recently brought by Targetflow.

I am still disapointed that the boutique hotel planned by MCD (Allas same group as hotel Barcelona in Exeter, one in Brighton and Manchester I think) has been replaced by a travelodge!

How come they'd be so interested now? And what is it that's changed in the market to get them all interested? Was BH just not the right building...despite the fact that it would have been the best location and best lobby for a 5* I can think of..... |

maybe travelodge offered more cash...i guess the previous comment regards the lack of older buildings for conversions means everything is new build, and much like the shops, that means the bigger chains...Birmingham's curse

Before the extensive alterations to Baskerville House took place, and the completion of Beetham/HCT, Radisson were in negotiations to develop Baskerville House as one of their 'Edwardian' brand hotels in the city. IMO one of several reasons for not adapting Baskerville to a Radisson Edwardian, was due to poor vehicular access to the frontage of the building, which is pedestrianised directly on to Centenary Square. Subsequent plans to make the rear of the building the main entrance were dropped, and then the whole policy altered, which involved bringing instead the Radisson 'SAS' brand to Birmingham at the new HCT/ Beetham tower.

I would like a Sheraton, a Sofitel, a W ( I wish) a Le Meridien, a NH, a Hilton and a Four Seasons ( I wish II) - is that asking too much? I should think if they pulled their thumbs out of their arses at the NEC (Solihull Council thinking the NEC is green belt ??!!??) they could probably build about 5 big hotels down there along with another Brindley Place.
The Travelodge planned for Newhall Sq is our 11th in the city apparently.

I drove down the Hagley Road and saw the new cheapo hotel going up next to TGI's (old Duck Inn) and thought I was back in California!! It's timber construction!!! They are building it in wood! Just like the condo's of LA!

Concept to transform NEC HQ into Ramada Encore hotel;
CONSTRUCTION Birmingham-based project management company Concept has been appointed by Alfred McAlpine to manage the conversion of the NEC's headquarters into a pounds 20 million Ramada Encore hotel. The appointment, under Alfred McAlpine's hotel development and operation joint venture, New World Leisure, sees work start on the 70,000 sq ft, 166 bedroom development in March, with completion due within 18 months. The hotel will also have a restaurant, conference and meeting rooms and a business centre. The contract is the latest of several for Concept from Alfred McAlpine/New World Leisure. Work has already begun on three pounds 6 million hotels in Haydock, Crewe and Barnsley, with schemes in the pipeline in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter, Newport and Cambridge. Keith Park, regional director at Concept's Birmingham office, said: "We're delighted to have been selected to work on this project as the latest scheme in Alfred McAlpine's hotel programme. "We have a strong track record in the leisure sector and a solid well-established reputation within Birmingham. The combination has proved to be winning formula." Mark Wright, development director at Alfred McAlpine, said: "This scheme is a complex conversion project that the Concept team are very much getting to grips with. The NEC is a superb location for our hotel programme and we're looking forward to completing the development in the heart of this thriving destination." http://www.hotelsmag.com/default.asp
