Great news! I still don't like the tone of our falling behind our Northern rivals - they may not be 5 Star but Brum's the only city with a Hotel du Vin and Malmaison (most cities have one or the other) and we have a Hyatt Regency too which is class.

But according to today's Birmingham Mail, although the 'Hotel's manager who did not wish to be named, refused to comment on the cleanliness of the hotel, [he] said that it was currently undergoing a £2.5million refurbishment'.

Yet again, the Britannia chain's reputation as being a set of complete dives is well earned. It was the same last year, and the year before that. Tut tut tut.

The hotel needs to look across the road at the McDonalds Burlington for inspiration. The Britannia needs to move it's reception from that dingy alleyway too and have its entrance on New Street with a meet and greet chap in uniform at a desk for a better welcome. Taxis should be able to have access to the front.

Im sorry but that building is a serious blot on our landscape and needs to be "BULLDOZED" and now. It is Sh-----------------------------it

Totally disagree mate.

I think the building is great. They just need to kick out the half-wits that occupy it and run a sorry excuse for a hotel, and make better use of the building. Scrap that shabby side entrance for a start, a use the front properly - there's a ready made frontage just begging to be used!

A large slosh of soap & water would help too!

Took these yesterday and with a very large slosh of soap and water it is quite a nice art deco-ish building.

Nice pics Feltip! Iy just screams "Grand Entrance" to me! Who owns the building anyway? About time they kicked O2 out. And Brittania for that matter!

Sorry the full list wasn't posted earlier. Just checked the link and Brittania have 3 hotels in the top 10.

Very and I think they have been in that list for a number of years from what people have said. I thought Hoteliers sought to improve their ratings and encourage better occupancy.

The building is nice. Would make a great department store or another hotel

It was actually built to be a department store back in the late 30's, but the war sort of messed that plan up. The shop was called something like Marsh adn Snellgrove...

Yep! Marshall & Snelgrove.

I think it operated as a store for some time. Not sure when it closed.
