I can't picture where it went, I'm pretty sure it didn't go to the car park as that was accessed off the side street further back (about where the Selfridges car park entrance is now?).
It might have been an access to the service road by the Ship-a-shore? |

http://www.flickr.com/photos/geoffsi...in/photostream A couple of shots which show a little bit more, one of which labels it as an entrance to the car park so perhaps I was wrong on that. |

So has the 1960's raping of Birmingham given a single FUCKING improvement?
I'm yet to fucking see one.

This seemed the best thread for this. Go the link and click section 3 for Birmingham. It is a digitised Bradshaw's guide and this section has Birmingham and Coventry in it. His walk through the old New St station is interesting. Also interesting is his appreciation of old (to him as well as us) buildings. The disregard of the old in the 50s and 60s seems peculiar to that time alone.

Couple of aerial shots from the early 1970s I've managed to dig out.
The first is of the city centre in 1971 (apparently). The traffic island you see there is Holloway Circus. I'm not too sure if this is 1971 as The Sentinels are far from completed (I'm sure they were finished in 1971), parts of New Street station are still under construction, and the Central Library looks to have barely started construction... ![]() This is an aerial shot of Spaghetti Junction nearing completion in 1972.

I thought the Sentinels were finished in 1973 and the Central Library opened in Jan 1974.

Great shots, I can't get over how flat the city centre seems. GPO Tower looks huge compared to everything else.

I like the old Salford stadium.
When did that get demolished? Only recently.

I've also just noticed that the second phase of the Civic Centre Estate is under construction behind where the Rep is now, which would put it at late 1968 or very early 1969... Either way, very interesting photo in my opinion!

I really like the buildings that lead down towards the church . I don't know too much about the building behind the church or when it was removed :

I never realised how "isolated" the university and Longbridge were when they were built.

When you also consider that the clock tower at Birmingham Uni is the same height as Alpha Tower, for decades it would have been the only 'tall' structure in the Birmingham area that could be seen for miles around!

When it was built it was called the beacon of the midlands and you can see why.
In South Birmingham it's still a landmark and useful pointer and amazing how far away you can still hear Old Joe striking.
