At the end of the day, it is a conventional carrier, which is/was going to have STOVL aircraft... not the other way around.

They meant that it has the space tailor made for cats and traps. It has 2x 1.5 metre wells for the catapults, it has the working spaces for arrestor gear, and it is pre-wired and designed around the third generator which would be needed for CATOBAR ops.
I don't think it's too late for QE to be fitted with a third genny (it's only a few weeks since the other two were installed), and it's certainly early enough in the build to have the cats and traps fitted. The big question marks for me are the maturity of the technology (EMALS etc), and whether the MoD included detailed achitectural designs for the nitty-gritty of making the CATOBAR setup work, in the original design commission.

And to think it was going so well, what are the odds of this happening?

If true, who will join me in marching on westminster with whatever weaponry you can improvise?

Well, not a lot of takers for a carrier of that size & price. India has its own indiginous program and they're talking of putting QE into mothballs 'or possibly sold' - its all conjecture to be honest - so she would be a STOVL carrier, again not many takers.

2018 could well be a totally different place so I can see the Navy thinking... lets play the waiting game. Also worth remembering the torygraph has been anti-carriers from the start.

Hopefully the drop from 24 to 19 frigates/destroyers is true though - a better result than 6 of each!

No carrier borne strike for 9 years, no carrier borne copters for 2 years!?

Well those Liam Fox champions will be dissapointed, no wonder Clinton was pissed if she got a whiff of the way this was going.

I don't see a gap in a Helicopter carrier tbh, but I don't think in general when the Army held all the cards the RN will come out of it too badly at all. The SDSR was always going to be a fudge - we picked up on that early on. It was going to take some sacrifices/patience on behalf of the RN to get to where they wanted to be.

Just a shame we will never see this. Portsmouth is a nuclear free zone, so she will never dock or enter waters there. Wonder where the RN will base her.

Wow. Thought she would have been nuclear powered.

Seems we are getting the two new ships after todays news, but the new aircraft wont be ordered until 2019.

That was always about the intended date for enough F35. But the good news is that Cameron appeared to say that HMS Queen Elizabeth would be converted to cat & trap and not PoW - which would add more time.

Good point, the more time it takes to build, the less time it's sitting there looking pretty, while the public protest about the costs and how much they've fudged up the timing.

He did leave the door open for extra planes or the two to both be in service saying their would be another review in 2015 and spending 2015 to 2020 may increase rather than decrease, but thats an unfunded aspiration.

It seems there has been no reduction to the number of F-35 on order (which stodd at 138). Given the delivery/procurement schedule, it shouldn't break the bank anyway.

Lockheed Weighs U.K. Decision To Switch JSF Variant
Lockheed Martin officials are "evaluating" the impact of the United Kingdom's decision to nix its planned buy of 138 F-35B short takeoff and vertical landing versions of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter in favor of the F-35C carrier variant. "We will work closely with the U.K.'s Ministry of Defence to assess the impact of any reductions to the program and to support their decision" to switch to the F-35C, reads an Oct. 19 company statement.

Still, the Bethesda, Md.-based company has not been informed of any delays or reductions to the total number of F-35s Britain intends to purchase, "so it's not yet possible to gauge overall cost impact to F-35," company spokesman John Kent said.

Seems to be a lot of confusion regarding FJ numbers, though we can't seriously expect to receive all 138 JSF's.

Typhoon has already been cut significantly. Harrier's gone. Tornado has been reduced in numbers. Bases have been closed. Bet the RAF are well happy. At least they'll get a cut down order of Chinooks to play with, which probably come without rotors or something.

And to top it all off - I could potentially lose my job due to cuts in the MoD.

Cheers Osbourne, you cunt.
