MARMARAY: Asia meets Europe

This Project is one of the major transportation infrastructure projects in the world at present. The entire upgraded and new railway system will be approximately 76 km long. There will be 3 tracks, two of them for the metro line and one for the highspeed-line between Konya and Istanbul.
Marmaray project is expected to be finished in 2009. After its completion, the share of the rail transport will rise from 4% up to 27%, placing Istanbul to 3rd rank in the world after Tokyo and New York City.

That's the line which will be completed in 2009.

That's how Istanbul will look like by 2009.Most of the projects will be completed in 2006-2007 except the marmaray project which will be complted by 2009.

Tube will be great! For the first time Railways of Europe and Asia will meet with each other through Bosphorus.

Passing of metro line through historical peninsula is bad from one way, it will slow down the works, because that area is filled with archeological treasures, I bet they will meet more as long as they dig, and those artifacts or ruins need to be carefully revealed. On the other hand, it is a very good chance to get them from the underground. But I still fear that it will delay the completion.

Wow, truly impressive! Correct me if I'm wrong: this will be the first railway connection between the Asian and European parts of Turkey? There's also one bridge for road traffic (or are there more?) thanks

Great project, but why do they only construct 1 track for highspeedrail?

Turkey Building the World's Deepest Immersed Tube Tunnel

Since the 19th Century, Turks have dreamed of connecting Europe and Asia via a tunnel under the Bosporus. Soon, that dream will come true in the form of the 8.25-mile-long Marmaray Tunnel, which will provide a rail link for a rapid transit system.

Tunnels on such a scale have been built before, but the Marmaray engineers had to deal with an extra hurdle — they're working in an earthquake zone. According to seismic experts, the nearby North Anatolian Fault has a 62 percent chance of generating a strong quake within the next 30 years. The solution: While most of the tunnel will be bored through solid rock, the central mile-long section under the Bosporus will consist of an "immersed tube" fabricated in sections on the surface and then sunk and joined together on the seabed. Unlike a tunnel bored through rigid rock, the submersed sections will be connected by flexible joints made of thick, rubber-reinforced steel plates, which can absorb quake movement without breaking. When it opens in 2010, the Marmaray will be the deepest such tunnel ever constructed, with a maximum depth of 180 ft. And, East and West will meet without getting their feet wet.

MARMARAY TUNNEL
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Price Tag: $3.3 billion
Completion Date: 2010
Total Length: 8.25 miles
Immersed Section: 4600 feet

This is an amazing project and will be great once complete. Currently, Istanbul has such an inadequate transport system for a city as large as it is. The metro is tiny, and until the new section is open that crosses the Goldern Horn, it really is just a short suburban hop for the rich (and to nowhere). And the tram/light rail system is far too small for Istanbul. Still, projects like this and the others to extend the metro will greatly improve transport around this amazing city.

It will be sad to see the ferries loose passengers though, but as long as they still survive this will be a far better option for local transport.

i don't think the ferries will lose passengers
because using the ferries means relaxing for 15 mins
its such a contrast to the hectic city
when you are on the f
