Spotlight On: Elysian Hotel Chicago
By Derek Gale, Senior Editor -- Hotels, 2/27/2009 7:42:00 AM

...
HOTELS: The statement released mentions that the Elysian is not announcing a new culinary partner “at this time.” Does that mean the hotel does plan to bring in a different partner?

Quinlan: We will be bringing in a new culinary partner. We have a few options on the horizon, and we hope to be able to share our new partner with the community shortly.

HOTELS: Is one of the possibilities a local Chicago chef?

Quinlan:
Yes, that is one of the possibilities. The partner we choose will exemplify the 5-star experience.

this otherwise interesting project is covered in disgusting pre-fab materials that wash the whole building out and cheapen the chicago skyline

i think it's a clever technique that gives the building a lot more detail. plus it looks a lot better than plain concrete. do you think the condo owners would want to absorb the costs of real stone for the entire building? in this day and age there are very few buildings that go as far as this one has for pure aesthetics.

This is the first time I have heard that Charlie Trotter backed out of the deal.

I've loved watching this building go up. I'm really excited to see what kind of lighting they use. That crown could really be something special if the right lighting is used.

Nice tower. But is will be much better if the window frames were black.

i've heard others say that too... dunno. if you look at the rendering you'll notice lucien is using the black at the base, with the blaconies, and the middle windows at the top. i'm wondering if he's using it as an accent on the tower? maybe all black would have been too heavy?

I'd prefer the cladding to be a shade darker - give it a more gothic and beaux-arts appearance. Also, make the window frames black - they contrast too heavily with the balconies and blend in with the cladding - it almost looks tacky!

I wouldn't have liked it if also the windows were black. Way to heavy, and too much contrast with the cladding, that is perfect this color, giving it a "light" look, instead of overshadowing the area if it was too dark (like to many towers do with a black facade).
And that is how the architect decided to do it, and I wouldn't criticize his work that went on for months and obviously thought this was the best way for the design (and unlike me, has studied design for years to get a degree in architecture).
So great job and great tower, I'm sure they did the best they could with what they had.

^ Ever heard of the term 'Milchmädchenrechnung'?

(meaning: naive assessment of the situation)

I dunno about black window frames either, there's already black balcony guard rails, but... it is hard to say without actually seeing it.

No, studied german for 7 years, never heard of that term.
Then again, your explanation in english doesn not make any sense eather, because I don't understand your point. Mind to explain in a more "argumented" way?

I agree with you guys, the black railings look amazing and stand out in a really good way. I think that if the window frames were painted black, it would do the same and make it more balanced.

well, i think i'm gonna reserve judgment until it's done. hard to tell until then. you can argue aesthetics all you want but lucien obviously has a reason for doing what he is doing. a lot of people love this tower and i happen to be one of them. can't wait to see it when they add the final details and all the bashers are left scratching their head about why they didn't see it coming.
