i noticed today that the balcony areas are being 'plastered' up into a setting. it comes off looking like wet cement at first then cures into the same color as the rest of the building.

For the first time today I went close to the building and I must say I'm very impressed by the facade. It looks really good. I'm from Paris and what I thought from underneath was, wow it's like they took a building from Paris and made it into a skyscraper and the result is perfect.

Indeed. Fantastic work, esp. considering the details don't turn out to be utter kitsch, but actually classy revivements of historical American skyscraper architecture. Lovely.

There's one detail I can't cotton up to, though. Those lights really are too much, pretty kitschy in some way:

Looks like something you get for 30 bucks in a do-it-yourself store.

I would prefer something like this, even if it's still some rather cheap model I found through ebay search:

Source: German ebay shop wohnkult

There are zillions of better examples (esp. real old ones), of course.
This is just an example how they could avoid the tackyness of nouveau-riche mansions.

Yeah - they look like Pottery Barn rip-offs - which would make them rip-offs of rip-offs LOL

individually they look a bit odd, but taken as a whole i think they work well together. in my opinion this is going to be one of the city's most distinctive towers (and much better than park tower).

Indeed, it's better than Park Tower. Quite some development Lucien LaGrange (the architect) gone through.

And indeed, the precast work on this is outstanding. Not much of a difference compared to lime/sandstone. Though it'd probably have been better to clad the base and the podium mansion with real limestone.
