this makes me wonder....most of the santa monica mountains cut through L.A...around how many square miles would that take out of L.A.'s total? this should be taken into account when figuring out L.A.'s density

im sure that could be figured out by calculating zoning square feets, but that would probably take forever given the size and numbers of independent cities

But are the moutains really included in the 469 miles that LA spans. Are they actually considered part of the City of Los Angeles? I always believed that they were calculated out of the land area, just like water is.

They are fully included! So you would have to somehow factor them out. I'm not sure how much land they take up but remember they are not necessarily uninhabited fully rather they are very low dense to no dense. Looking at a map of LA city I suspect they take up def a quarter if not almost a third of LA's land area.


But the bus map is more telling. Look how routes cease to exist.

i superimposed two images to see how much of the santa monica mountain range covers L.A.'s city limits...and WOW...it's almost 1/3rd of the total!!
(looks like a big foot!)


can someone figure out how many square miles it would take out of the city limits? Without this mountain range splitting L.A. in half, i'm sure the density figures will be much much higher...i'm sure, at least, over 10,000 pp.sq/mile

The census dept. counts all non-citizens, including illegal immigrants. That's one of the absurdities that one agency of the government knows they exist and where they live, but they don't report it to another agency to have them deported.
