Construction activity is probably going on at a healthy pace like last year.

The power surplus situation no longer exists. Power cuts have made a comeback after a decade of no power cuts. Three power generaton units will go onstream in a year but will it be enough? With increasing wealth, power consumption is rising. Indusries are also coming up.

Cellphones seem to be in everyone's hands from the vegetable vendor to the milkman.

I thought travelling has become more difficult with rising vehicular population. Travelling around had been relatively easier last year. A few more flyovers at important junctions may help the situation. There is very little scope for infra development in the core city as it is very congested. One can see cars of almost every brand on the city roads, a rarity a few years back.

Kolkata has generally been a low income city with a small business class. Now however you can see a growing and more moneyed middle class.

Dankuni Junction; somewhere in Dankuni will come up DLF City. Although land availabilty, after the recent troubles, may be an issue.

Continuing our journey on Durgapur Expressway

There are service roads on either side on most of the stretch that we drove on. Although a few areas seemed to be missing like bridges over canals. The fencing has been torn down in many places by villagers (despite many designated underpasses). Old habits die hard. Saw many dumb people running across the road risking their lives for no reason. Motorcyclists, bicycles and even cycle rickshaws were just coming on the expressway and getting off wherever they pleased. No tolls for them. There is simply no law enforcement and people who are lawless are taking advantage of the lack of highway patrol. I even saw a doodhwala (milkman) huffing and puffing while pedalling his bicycle over an expressway bridge. And right along this bridge was a nice empty service road at level ground for people like him. The most pathetic scene was a lady from one of the villages getting on to the highway with her goats and letting them feed on the landscaping plants. Maybe she believes the goats will give better milk if they eat the NHAI flowering plants. Dumbness and lawlessness. But then these were a few exceptions considering the population around is in lakhs.

Continuing...

Spotted a Royal Cruiser bus service. These are the latest additions to the transportation industry in WB, thanks to the GQ. These services run from Kolkata to various places like Asansol, Siliguri, Bhubaneshwar (Orissa) and Vizag (AP). I did see these buses several times during the day in the city itself.

Keep going

Change of pace to break the monotony of the road trip. We will come back later to continue the road trip. For now let's do some nagar darshan (city sightseeing).

The E-Mall (an electronics mall) coming up on Central Avenue in place of Magnet House. Some people have questioned the coming up of such buildings in place of older buildings.

There seems to be some improvement in the 'looks' of the newer long distance buses. Spotted this one on Shakespeare Sarani

And just as we turned on AJC Bose Road and went a few blocks north spotted this building.. Colour coordinated?

Another cloudy evening. The storm just didn't take place although it gave some respite from the sweaty heat.

Kolkata often throws up little surprises. Right on an ex-garbage dump and surrounded by shanties is Swabhumi. It's like Dilli Haat and also has a multiplex adjacent to it. Condominium complexes are coming up in the premises of old mills.

The bad thing about Swabhumi is that it is built on this garbage dump (now a hillock) and has too many stairs and levels. It looks good but it is tough for the old (but rich) people who live in the upmarket neighbourhoods. Didn't see any elevators nor any handicapped access. There is a road that leads to the top for the party entrance.

Swabhumi - the entrance gate

the entrance to the performing arts area and the boutiques

The handicrafts section

The food court

Cinema 89, adjacent to the complex and connected by a bridge

A new building under construction in the same row - a crudely written signboard says - Navaketan Nursing Home...

While Salt Lake is filled with four (four +1) storey apartment blocks, there are quite a few ugly government highrise blocks. This particular private apartment block seems to have broken the trend of low rise blocks.

Ugly twins (Bikash Bhaban and Jalsampad Bhaban) get a fresh coat of paint. Not sure what paint these government buildings use. For after the first monsoon, the 'freshness' is usually gone.

Purta Bhaban - municipal affairs

One of the blocks of the Central Government Office Complex - looks like any PWD building. Some paint please.

Development Consultants - a Kolkata based engineering consultancy - note the use of bamboo scaffolding which is very common unless the buildings are real tall. The building probably will look pretty nice, once completed. The statue is that of West Bengal's first chief minister - Dr Bidhan Chandra Ray. He was the man behind many projects in the state including Salt Lake. The city is now named after him - Bidhannagar - West Bengal's equivalent of Gandhinagar.
