When Morocco was a French protectorate (from 1912 to 1956), the colonial government maintained an active program of historic preservation. Of course, Morocco has long had its legendary grand hostelries( Palais Jamai, Gazelle d'Or, La Mamounia...etc) but what is most exciting is the renovations or reinterpretations of old Moroccan buildings that have been carried out in or near the medinas.

Tadelakt is a bright, waterproof lime plaster which can be used on the inside of buildings and on the outside. It is the traditional coating of the palaces, hammams and bathrooms of the riads in Morocco. It is characteristically polished with a river stone and treated with a soft soap to acquire its final appearance. Tadelakt has a soft aspect with undulations due to the work of the stone; it is water-tight, which also makes it suitable for making bathtubs and washbasins and confers great decorative capacities. Tadelakt is generally produced out with lime of the area of Marrakech, but other types of lime can also be appropriate.
