Really nice project, but it's really sad what happend there on the 11th September 2001. I still will have to get used to the new towers, because it makes me think more about a Asian skyline like Hong Kong than NYC. The twin towers were unique. They made NYC and now it are more standard buildings, you know. It all has to be modern looking towers, which you already see hundreds of in Asia. But I have to say this was my favourite project to be build. So that's the positive thing.

I can't agree with that, seeing most the towers in Asia are design and develope by americans. believe me must New Yorkers are happy with the new design. Most people can't get over the plan look of tower one. But I love the whole site.

For those who haven't seen it on the EarthCam, the first pieces of steel reached ground level.

Some extra pictures from the 40 feet deep glacier hole on the Tower 4 site. This hole caused some delays as it had to be filled with concrete before construction work could be continued. The pictures are from the 28th of August. Currently the hole is completely filled with concrete:

Pictures are from wtc.com

That rock hole is incredible, I'd like to imagine it converted into a rock pool in the basement lol.

Amazing - that almost makes it look like they're working in the outback of northwestern Arizona.

agreed - the striated bedrock looks incredible. The power of glaciers huh. Looks like a Bond villain's lair, wouldn't want to fall into that concrete.

is that steelwork permanent.....? looks a little flimsy for a tower that going to be nigh 300m high!

I think that's steelwork for the memorial. It's as high as it's going to go.

My first thought in seeing these workers within all these ancient rocks reminded me of the subterranean images of Beneath the Planet of the Apes - seriously.

What was that hole when the original WTC was still there? Was it filled in then? Or was it just a great big hole under the foundations?

Wasn't that under one of the low-rise buildings? If so, that's the first time that that rock has seen daylight since the last Ice Age.

Is this a new model? I see the crown for 1 WTC isn't the new one. Did they change it back to the older design?
