ALICANTE | Public Transport

TRAM- Metropolitano de Alicante
Alicante city
(Spain), 325.000 inh in municipality, 450.000 inh in urbanized area and almost 1.000.000 inh in metro area.

New undergroung section launched!!

The new line are served by trams and train-trams (100km/h speed), they seem a tram but they got the thrust of a train.

Also trains serve the L9.

Ooh, I really like it! Seems rather deep underground too. I wonder, though, on the map, what's the deal with the thing at the end of L4?

Mercado central is +20 meters deep.

All lines unless L2 are along the coast, L4 goes on surface into a cape, at the end of it there is a ring where the line is only oneway.

A little of history, Grey line is "L9":

Grey line called "North Line", in the past was an single track and "no electrificated line" (i can't explain better) that goes from Alicante, to Denia (93km or 57 mi), now a days, it's beeing reconverted to a light rail (L1 it's old L9 after the refurbishment, with tram-trains and tramways)
The first section that was reconverted to light rail was this:

Next, was reconverted about 13km/8mi. until Campello station, was created new stations between old ones.

With the new underground section to the city centre (MARQ-Mercado) Alicante has converted in the first spanish city with a tram-train and tramways running in a tunnel (it's the only spanish city with tram-trains)

New section of L4 beeing in operation, after stay more than a year "off" because we don't have enought tramways and tram-trains.

With the end of the refurbishment between Campello and Creueta track and stations, was created L1.

This how the TRAM works along Alicante City (L1 continues more than 20km as train, and L9 doesnt apear but is 60km long as train too) "Black" line is national rail (trains to Barcelona, Valencia, Madrid etc...)

(Mediterranean sea has not that color xD)

PD: If someone has any question, ask!

Seems like there is a growing trend to build these time of tram systems (porto, seville, etc). It seems like the ideal system for smaller cities.

df The announcement here is almost identical in Spanish and Valencian. Since all people who speak Valencian speak basic Spanish the announcement could have just been in Spanish and English...maybe making room for French or German, whichever of the 2 speakers Alicante attracts the most (I think many Germans visit Alicante).

Well, this is something particular to Spain, so it is hard to use other standards in monolingual countries.

About 80% of people in Alicante thats talk spanish, knows how to talk and write in valencian (but doesn't use it normally), in small cities, how theres no inmigration (people of Madrid, Sevilla etc don't understand valencian), conserves the lenguage and use it all the time (valencian), but in bigger cities like Alicante, theres a lot of lenguagues (spanish, valencian, english, germany...) and valencian government wants to conservate the lenguage, when per example, in TRAM you hear the announcement in valencian, is not beacuse if somebody doesn't understand spanish or english, is for conservate the language as a cultural thing.

In other cities like Benidorm is easier to see shops and restaurants in english than spanish or valencian, but of curse, if you walk along it steets, you thing "that's Spain, U.K or Germany" because there's more population with english as principal lenguage.
