Popular project

Art imitates Life

Driving a 90' steel beam at an angle into clay.

The black rounded coupling (yello rope runs past it) will fit on the pipe attached to the solidly positioned raft. Marks are for where it is positioned.

Sophisticated laser equipment for placing the new piles.

The sophisticated angle measurement device ;-)

Everyone needs a place to put their stuff.

Good Neighbor ?? This blocks off any large trucks using the pass under the building

from the other side

Trying to figure out what they've hit (sounded like a big rock).

Trying to figure out what they're doing - river work.

From Clark st.

Pivoting a barge (tug is pushing on other end)

Strong retention wall (note the long bolts holding the verticle sheet piles to the beam that the tiebacks attach to).

Where is all this demand coming from? Is the office occupancy rate in Chicago that high? I'm not knocking it, just curious. There are always many good size towers under construction in Chicago, and so many have been built in the last ten years. I loved the new towers my last visit there. The development was crazy.

Office demand over the last few years has been relatively healthy in Chicago the last few years (a good deal better then the suburbs).

Hines is building this office on spec however which I think is really the first case with new commercial building construction in downtown since the 1980's IIRC.

July 5th

Now I see why all the piles were cut -almost- all the way through and left pointing up - the guy with the torch needs a crane to hold the top piece while he is cutting - then to take the (hot) piece of scrap over to the scrap pile. (7/3)

Got Piles ?

Beam that Tie-backs are bolted to bolted to each sheet pile.

(6/24)

Sheet piles will be perpendicular here- lotsa bolts. (they are much shorter).

Old style re-bar (the squared bar above their heads) next to modern stuff - anyone know the history of the old re-bar ?

busy river

Case is gone

leaving on well camoflauged hole ;-)

River Point Scores 225k Tennant

Quote:
McDermott Will & Emery LLP signed its anticipated lease in the River Point office development, and the law firm plans to stay a while.

The 20-year lease locks in the firm's commitment for about 225,000 square feet in the 45-story tower at the Chicago River and Lake Street until at least 2037, said Jeffrey Stone, a Chicago-based co-chairman of the international firm.

The firm in January confirmed it had a letter of intent with the building's developers — Houston-based Hines Interests L.P., Montreal-based Ivanhoe Cambridge and Chicago developer and restaurateur Larry Levy — but did not disclose the length of the deal at 444 W. Lake St.

Developers began work in January on the platform that will cover Metra and Amtrak rails on the site. That portion of the project, backed by $29 million in city tax-increment financing in exchange for a 1.5-acre park to be developed on the site, will be completed by the end of this year, said Greg Van Schaack, a senior vice president at Hines.

The new strip of riverwalk will open at that time, but because of construction of the tower — set to begin by mid-2014 — the park won't open until it is completed in late 2016 or early 2017, Mr. Van Schaack said.

Building the wall

Even with the slightly narrowed stretch - a pair of barges tied up, Kayaks, Tour boats and yachts - the work still goes through.

Part of the old wall - not as solid as it looked

Tower Side

Prepping the main pad

Strain Gauge (O-Cell)

This sleeve was missed (it had been camaflauged) and they had to cut it out - once cut all the way around it still wouldn't come free - so they used a jackhammer on it - very very loud.

this new steel wall, is it permanent, or another one will be build and this is just to keep the water out?

This is actually one of my favorite skyscraper projects in the country right now. Its major strength is that it bookends one of the greatest skyscraper canyons in the world. Should look magnificent from the Wabash bridge.

John Flint - the steel sheet piles are permanent. - decades type lifespan.

The wall

A really thick pad.

Positioning the rebar jussst right.

The old pilings were so far gone they just pounded the new I-Beam piles right through them.

Just the creosote cap left.

This is the final wall on the river side - it holds back the clay (mud) that the tracks sit on and the plaza will be above. Should last a bit longer and better than the wooden one.

Epoxy coated - used where there is a chance of Salt - Chicago LOVES salt - piles of salt will be on the plaza at the first hint of freezing (iced walkways), salt will be brought into the tunnel by the trains, any parking area will need to be ready for big globs of frozen salted slush to come off of the undersides and wheel wells of the cars.

Anticipating some pull.

conduit ?

More sleves for the park area - looks like they wanted the retaining wall installed before they put in the last supports.
