It's not clear because we always refer to motorways by name, not by number...

Well it's Trakija - it's a flat valley - look at some map if you don't believe me...

At least it has shiny crash barriers, sth that the Hemus doesn't seem to have

This stretch of Trakija is about 1-2 years old, meanwhile the Hemus one dates back to the 80's...

Struma's crash barriers are dusty already, though they're also quite new

Sorry for reviving the thread with this question.
For Bulgarian forumers: Which route would you recommend from Veliko Tarnovo to Svilengrad? After Nova Zagora i should go Simeonovgrad-Harmanli and then motorway, or directly to Svilengrad.
Which is the status of Veliko Tarnovo-Nova Zagora road? Has it been upgraded?

Veliko Tarnovo - Nova Zagora was opened in November partially reconstructed. It shall be comfortable to drive, though you will pass the mountains. Still, it is a much better option than the road trough Gabrovo, where you have to travel the 1300 m. high Shipka pass. It is an interesting route, but slower than the other one.
After Nova Zagora: Simeonovgrad - Harmanli is a better option in my view. the road is better maintained, because there is the biggest thermal power plant in Bulgaria. I am quite not sure about the situation on road 55 - Nova Zagora - Svilengrad....

yes, the road through nova zagora and republika pass is much easier than the one through shipka pass.after nova zagora i've been only on nova zagora-simeonovgrad-harmanli-svilengrad route and wasn't at all impressed by its quality.

so the motorway Harmanli slivengrad is shite? I thought the Marica motorway has good quality. On googleearth the road looks very black and new, maybe they paved it bad and the road is uneven.

Motorway Harmanli - Svilengrad is not "shite"... but national Road 55 nova Zagore - Svilengrad may be. i have never travelled on it - I do not know. The fact is that most TIR drivers prefer the road trough Simeonovgrad...

no, the motorway is good but i was reffering to the national road, through simeonovgrad, which is not of good quality, and indeed there are lots of trucks going through there.maybe someone can inform us about the direct 55 road nova zagora-svilengrad?

Do you have pics of any roads in Bulgaria, I find it bad that only few users put effort in it and take pics of the roads, we have never seen pics of the marica motorway, of the road to Kyustendil and many more.

I guess because it is acclivity before the tunnel and the 3rd-right lane is allowed for use by the trucks or slower wehicles...
