Yes, very much so. Especially on Sunday evening when people come back from their birthplaces.

Na zdraví!

Yep - this below is A1 before Sofia

As Zaro said both A1 and A2 exits are very busy on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. The problem with A2 is that there are still 7 unfinished kilometers before Sofia(now a 2x2 highway on a differetn route passing through 2 villages) that according to the operative programm transport should have been in construction since January 2008 ... but due to the failure of our governemnt to fight corruption the funds for this project were freezed.

A1 on the other hand connects directly with the city highway "Tsarigradsko Shose" and right to the city downtown there is only one place with traffic lights on its route ... This is the last junction of A1's extension towards west - "Tsarigradsko Shose" before Sofia downtown. (Downtown left of the photo, Plovdiv - right)

What's the status on the Lyulin? I thought it was to be partially opened before the 2009 parliamentary elections (which were held day before yesterday)

Since our politicians took great care to stop the Eu funding, the state had no money to pay the contractor, who proposed the lowest offer and had to bring its own workers from Turkey to make it cheaper...

The government tried very hard to open 5 km of the new motorway, leading basically to nowhere... but they even did not succeed in this. They opened it only for the eurocommissioner for transport for 1h - and still it was an unfinished stretch.
We will see how the new government will deal with motorways - Boyko Borisov (most probably the next prime minister) said in his post-election press- conference that motorways are immediate priority...

Тhe first objectives declared by the possible new minister of Regional develeopment and infrastructure is that Lyulin [A5](0 out of 19km. built), Trakia [A1](280 out of 443 km. built) and Maritsa [А3](38 out of 117 km. built) will be completely finished till the end of their 4 years mandate.

It's a quite doable task, only if they clean up the corrupted procedures, release the eurofunds and really make the road agency work transperantly...

I wish them good luck!

Yes, hopefully ... but there's no chance for it to be finished in 4 years. Also I don't think the European commission will give funding for A2(which is not part of some of the pan-european corridors) before we finish the motorways that run on the route of the pan-european corridors such as the mentioned above.

The new government announced ambitious plans to complete following 3 motorways within its term - A1, A3 and A5 (Trakia, Maritza and Lyulin). After that they should concentrate on Norther parts with A2(Hemus) as priority.

It's important indeed, but just can't be finished within the 4 years mandate, just like Hemus A2 - that's for sure. I hope they start a couple of lots from it though - Dolna Dikanya-Blagoevgrad and Sandanski-Greek Border. In fact there were 600mil. EUR alocated from the Operative Program Transport for the construction of Struma for the period 2007-2012, but recently was announced by the EC that 350 of them will go for the construction of the remaining 3 lots of Trakia A1, while with the rest 250 mil. EUR, the above mentioned lots of Struma will be started, hopefully from the beggining of next year, if the new government cleans up the crap of the previous one and releases the EU funds.

Well, Trakia [A1] and Maritsa's [A3] completion is more important for now

Hopefully till 2012-13 we'll be able to travel all along a motorways from Sofia to Burgas and from Sofia to Istanbul. It's a quite doable job, if only the new government manages to clean up quickly the crap left by the previous ex-commies one.

Liulin's first 5 km. Update

The paint is there because some EU commissioner was about to come on a visit , so the ex-government decided to put some cheap paint, even though they have 2 more layers of asphalt to add over the existing one Thanks god they will soon be out of power as the people of Bulgaria fired them on the recent elections.
