Yesterday on the press conference on the beggining of Lot 2 near Stara Zagora the infrastructure minister Plevneliev also announced that currently under construction are a total of 84 km. of motorways in the country(19 - Lyulin, 31 - Maritsa, 34 - Trakia).

On 2 August will be made the first sod of Lot 3 (Nova Zagora - Yambol) of Trakia - 36 km. and hopefully in September the construction of Lot 4(Yambol - Karnobat) - 47 km. will begin as well.

The 31 km. stretch of Maritsa will be opened for traffic in the middle of August and if everything goes on schedule in October we'll have a total of 136 km. of motorways currently U/C in the country.

Let's hope that Lyulin will be finished and opened for traffic till May next year and that by that time there will be some more lots of Hemus, Struma and Maritsa with finished tenders.

The contracts must be signed in one month so that the construction starts even this year and the motorway be build even during winter.

A nice update of the progress on Lyulin Motorway by FloatingShift

The southern one is far better to drive one due to the new sections of the ring road which are 3x3 and opened the last years. The north one is mostly a 1x1 road and it is in a really bad condition in the moment.

North->holes. South->heavy traffic. Through the center->heavy traffic again. Choose for yourself.

For further information you can ask your questions in the following topics in the bulgarian subsection:
  1. Motorways in Bulgaria
  2. General thread about roads and transportation in Bulgaria
  3. Sofia's infrastructure thread

The article, Turnovec has posted, contains many inaccuracies. The most grave to me is the statement that there are 4 transport corridors passing through Bulgaria(4,7,8,9). The truth is that they are 5. The fifth is 10c.

A couple of maps taken from a video announcing intentions about "serious work and completion of Sofia-SRB border Motorway(lot1), West Ring Road(from Lyulin Motorway to intersection between Sofia Ring Road and Sofia-SRB border Motorway;lot2) and Northern Speed Tangent(lot3) before 2014" and signing the contract for building lot 3(Nova Zagora-Jambol) of Trakia Motorway with Aktor:

Fixed radar control in BG?

Hello forum members,

I just arrived in BG for the summer vacations and have seen a map in 24Chasa that now there are fixed radar speed controls in BG on a number of highways. My bulgarian is not so good that I can get the details. Is there a website available with the points where the fixed radar cameras are located? Do they work only at a certain speed or if you drive 1 km/h more than allowed?
Until this year it was fine to drive in BG because you were warned by other drivers when there was a speed control. But now...

Thanks for the help!

Does anybody know what the status of A1 Harmanli - Kapitan Andreevo is? Some people report it is closed to traffic while Google Earth imagery shows traffic.

This is a map showing the installed Speed cameras, I am not sure how up to date it is, but I can verify the locations in Sofia and south west BG are correct.

Last time I travelled only some of it was a full grade highway that I wasn't very impressed by. A 2 by 2 highway with an emergency lane is already in operation between Harmanli and Lyubimets, however the section between Lyubimets and Svilengrad is a regular 2 by 1 road with construction works being executed parallel to it. That part will be ready by the end of this month, or so the government officials say. The last portion - between Svilengrad and the Turkish Border is a normal 2 by 1.

some new news. The Struma motorway will be closed for three months in oder for the workers to finish the construction of the bridges and junctions at Daskalovo, I don't have a clue, why the whole moorway needs to be closed for this, but that means, the Ljulin motorway is progressing really well.

It is not closed completely - they are building the second carriageway right now between Lybimets and Svilengrad (up to now it was more like a polaautoput from Serbia).
Last year the segment Harmanli - Lyubimets was closed one way due to asphalt deformations (this part of Bulgaria is especially hot in summer, also the road sees a lot of traffic). But I think they re-opened it few months ago.

I just passed on it today, it is only closed in the south bound direction.

+They are building a big bridge over Maritsa river near Harmanli. Anyway, not much work is left to be done. I think 31.08 is the deadline
