I suppose so, but changing an old sign because of writing mistakes or old spelling is very very rare here.

Nope, we just didn't have any official transcription rules. So everyone could write it as he wants.

No, you are not right. We did use "hats" on letters until 1999. It was called "БДС73"(Български Държавен Стандарт=Bulgarian State Standard) which was pretty close to the standard ISO 9 of International Standardization Organization.

A map of planned motorway&expressway network:

built
U/C
project
expressways

Yesterday our government managed to arrange eurofunding for Hemus Motorway[A2] and expressways Shumen-Ruse(RO), Varna-Vama Vece(RO), Plovdiv-Rudozem(this small town is 10km north from the greek border) and Dupnitsa-Ihtiman(this used to be a section of Rila Motorway, planned by the former government, which the new government decided to build as an expressway when swept the previous from power) in the next financial period 2014-2020. This is tremendous news. [A2] has been eagerly anticipated for more than 50years by bulgarians.

The Ruse-Shumen expressway is good news indeed, but nothing about Sofia-Vidin motorway? That's part of CIV and since the bridge will be over by then, it will also need motorway connection.

Otherwise, Bulgaria will have no motorway connection to C IV, while Romania has one motorway U/C on C IV, and another one planned for the connection with Calafat-Vidin bridge (the south C IV branch) during the same EU budgetary cycle 2014-2020.

I think that Sofia-Vidin is not that important because you have parallel motorway trough Serbia, so for Bulgaria is more important to build motorways that connects the country within.

And what about Romanian side of the border, is there connection to that bridge and will it be build and if yes when?

Yeah, but then what's the whole point of building the bridge at Calafat-Vidin, which was more a requirement of Bulgaria which Romania rallied to? Secondly, NW Bulgaria is the poorest region not only in Bulgaria, but in the whole EU. A motorway there would alleviate that.

The Vidin - Calafat Bridge would also be useful as an east-west connection from Serbia. I believe there are some plans for an east-west route through eastern Serbia towards Vidin.

Here's some more news about the new Bulgarian motorways and expressways:

http://news.ibox.bg/news/id_1905360958

I have a few questions concerning these Bulgarian expressways;

1) What is their Bulgarian name?
2) Are they numbered?
3) Which are planned? (apart from the ones mentioned in the article)
4) I thought the Rila route was planned as A7, not an expressway. What's the status?

The point is that BG and RO only have one bridge over Danube that connects them!!!!!!!
The bridge will connect people it doesn't have to be the part of some major network.

BTW Only in one city, Novi Sad, they've built 3 bridges in few years over the Danube and they will now start to build two more. And none of them are part of any European network they are bridges for locals. So if they need so many bridges, why wouldn't there be a point to build one bridge over Danube that connects two countries, connected only by one bridge.

I hope you see that building bridges between countries is a completelly different thing from building bridges in the same city. Secondly, the Danube is much wider in the RO-BG sector than anywhere in the EU. Anyway, these are useless excuses indeed. 2 more bridges will be built on the Danube between BG and RO in the coming decade within the EU Danube Strategy and are approved for EU funding as well.

BUT, the bridge is part of the major Pan-European Corridor IV. That's why the EU will fund the south sector of CIV in Romania - to make the connection with the bridge. I don't see why it wouldn't fund the BG section to Sofia. This is equally so for Varna-Vama Veche where I understand Bulgaria plans an express-way while Romania plans a motorway from Constanta to Vama Veche, also approved for funding from the EU.

I've seen it on some of those Serbian corridor maps. It was to be financed with privatization of Serbian state companies. It would connect central Serbia with southern Romania, and be a fast route between Beograd and Bucuresti.

The traffic is pretty busy today (at least for the Romanian section of CIV-South) but not nearly as busy it could be if a motorway were built from Timisoara to Craiova and then Vidin-Clalafat bridge. I believe this is also what the EU calculated when approving the south section of C IV.
