Yes, they are. Good job. The contrast between how they were only a couple of years ago (full of potholes) and how they are now is amazing. But still a lot of work needs to be done on many main roads.

I remember the road to Pleven and Ruse was still very bad some 3 years ago. We were very upset back then because of this (our romanian national roads were pretty much OK without bumps even then...well, mostly) and the fact that cops were constantly asking for bribes.

But things are sure moving a lot faster than back home, roadwise. I still don't know much about the integrity of the Bulgarian police, I hope they get checked now by the EU.

They forgot the side markings on the exit lane.

And seem to have forgotten quite a bit on this piece.

There also seems to be alot of gravel on the sides. And whats with the hut at the end of the exit lane on the 2nd pic?

Depends on the on the particular exit lane. In Macedonia for example most exit lanes do not have an emergency lane, but you can find ones that have too.

An awful lot of Dutch ones don't either. But in all fairness to Chris all newer Dutch motorways (1970 onwards) have stopping shoulders on exit lanes.

At first it seemed to me like a waste of resources to have them on all exit lanes, but considering how even one vehicle can clog it (if it only has one driving lane), perhaps it is justified to have them. Especially on longer exits.

No, it is waste of asphalt, German Autobahns don´t have emergency lames on exits either.

With traffic volumes over 100.000 a day, those things are very usefull. What if there is an accident ahead, and the exit lane is jammed?

German Autobahns are not the be all and end all of motorways. I find the way that junctions are enginered to be quite substandard considering the speeds. Apart from the fact that there is mostly no speed limit, I don't see anything exceptional about German Autobahns.

Indeed, I would even say German Autobahns are by far not the best of Europe. A lot of oldfashion concrete, baustelles all the way, and a lot of work has to be done on old signage. I'm afraid Germany gets the same problem as in the US; detoriating infrastructure, which is too much to repair as they can pay for.
