what route is usually used at Sofia - Istanbul direction: A1 to Stara Zagora and then #5 to Haskovo and further to Svilengrad, or A1 to Plovdiv, and then #56 and #8 to Haskovo and Svilengrad? which one is more usual and which one is better?

The usual route is the second one you mentioned as it's shorter. However, particularly at this time of year, you may be better off choosing the first option due to the heavy eastbound traffic on the ordinary two-way, single lane #8. Also, when using the first option, you may use a shortcut via #503 and #554 (Sredets - Opan - Simeonovgrad - Harmanli) that can save you some time. Just be sure to slow down when you reach Simeonovgrad.

but according the Google Maps traveling via Stara Zagora is onli 20 km longer. is that so? i thought it was at least 80 km.

20? I'm also surprized! It's less than 80 for sure, but that seems too little. Oh, well... If they say so... Maybe they're calculating it through that shortcut that I mentioned, but it still seems like very little.

There's an even shorter route through Chirpan, Merichleri & Dimitrovgrad, but I wouldn't recommend it before they fix the road. And when they do maybe the motorway will be ready, so...

No, just the connection between Rotterdam and Delft (A4 motorway). 7 km, partially underground, about €800M.

The next tender results:

On friday the price-offers for a A2 Hemus section between the ring road of Sofia and the present begining of A2 near village of Yana (8,46 km) were oppened.

The lowest price was given by the consortium between Trace Group Hold Ltd. and Konstruktor Croatia: The price: 31 950 309,45 BGN plus 20% VAT

That means 1,93 mio EUR/km without VAT and expropriation costs!

Bulgarian-Croatian Consortium to Construct Hemus Highway Section

The section of the Hemus Highway connecting it to the Sofia beltway will be built by a Bulgarian-Croatian consortium called Hemus A2.

The 8.5 km section of Hemus, the highway linking Sofia and Varna through Northern Bulgaria, is seen as crucial for unloading the heavy traffic in Sofia's suburban area.

The Hemus A2 consortium was selected after providing the lowest price for the section out of a total of 12 bidders in the tender.

The consortium includes Trace Group Hold, the same company currently constructing Lot 2 of the Trakiya Highway, SK-13 Patstroy AD – Pernik, and Constructor-Engineering AD from Croatia.

The construction of the new Hemus Highway section will be fully funded with EU money – from Operational Program Transport and the Cohesion Fund of the EU.

Currently, only 34% of the Hemus Highway have been constructed – that is, 145 km out of a total of 423 km.

The Hemus Highway is supposed to connect Sofia and Varna on the Black Sea through a shorter route than the southern Trakiya Highway (443 km), passing by several major northern cities – Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo, and Shumen. At present, however, only the start section from Sofia to Yablanitsa and the end section from Shumen to Varna have been completed.

it looks impressive, the Ljulin motorway. I love the beginning on the road, typical for Bulgarian motorways or nationalraods, out of the nothing a futuristic doom 3 road starts.

The construction of the 8km section Shumen-Belokopitovo of Hemus motorway[A2](east part) will bеgin on 19.07.2011. The constructor was chosen in 1995 but due to lack of funds construction was postponed.

Can you confirm that there are a few road delineators on Struma motorway[A6]?

There are a few at the beginning, the whole motorway with delineators would have looked much better. The markings of the Ljulin motorway are very good, they are really shiny and bright, just like markings have to be.
