Those pics are from the section Lyubimetz - Harmanli, which was first opened in december 2006 by the old socialist government and put into operation without its final surface course And so untill 2010 when the present government found financial resource for the finishing works. Perhaps that could explain a part of the reasons for that situation. The techical ones have to be investigated!

Man, I read all your comments on this thread, and I noticed a few things

1) You always seem to put hater comments about the Bulgarian motorways (whether it is Struma, Ljulin, Hemous)

2) You have posted at least 5 Slovenian motorways images here

So, why you don't keep your hater comments for yourself? It is obvious on that picture, that this is because of the emergency teams.

Those are valid comments from a traffic engineering point of view.

Actually all the motorway' tunnels in Bulgaria (8 at the moment) have such spaces in front of their entrances/exits, which are not barriered for the traffic. However the speed there is limited to 80km/h and it is generally keept, so I think the level of safety is high enough indeed. I personally would prefer the Slovenian/Austrian/Croatian and etc. version instead of ours, where every poles is behind a crash barrier and the speed limit is 100 km/h.

at some tunnels we also had similar situation like you in BG. but few accidents where the cars hit the edge of the tunnel in high speed changed the situation and showed that shit can actually happen.

Well, I don't say that couldn't happen in BG if you don't respect the speed limits and/or don't assess the situation.

We all know that some drivers don't drive safely. If they only killed themselves, it wouldn't bother me. Regardless, it makes sense to build the motorways in ways that are relatively safe rather than in ways that are relatively dangerous.

That's what I did try to explain in my upper replay: from a traffic engineering point of view it should be relatively the same safety level to have barried tunnel' entrances with 100 km/h speed limit in one hand and non barried ones with 80 km/h in the other. However this is my opinion!

By that logic, it would make sense to lay minefields alongside motorways and lower the speed limit to 50 km/h.

that's what i wanted to say. if we would stick to speed limits, there shouldn't be any barriers at all, right?

I don't want to argue with you about something I am convinced myself in. I just reason about traffic safety. Each country decides on that for itself. As I already said I would prefer the Slovenian/Austrian/Croatian way of tunnel entrances' setting up!

Hemus motorway

29 August 2011

Part 1:

We're getting on the motorway at the "Botevgrad" intersection.

Guess what's written on the road sign on the right.

"Pravets" intersection.

"Yablanitsa" intersection.

I don't know what do you think, but in my opinion, this photo is extraordinary. In this area Hemus motorway has pretty identical view to the croatian A1 near Split - everything is so tidy and clean, something so unlikely for a normal bulgarian motorway.

We're reaching the end of the motorway.
