The intersection is few km before Chirpan actually, and the motorway is all new road, not an upgrade to the old 1+1.

Maritsa motorway[A3] starts near Chirpan and ends at BG-TR border. The idea of this motorway is to replace(on a new alignment) the route you use from Plovdiv to Turkish border. In 2013 you will reach Turkey only by using Trakya motorway[A1] and Maritsa motorway[A3].
It is 114km long. From km 5+100 near Chirpan to km 72+960 near Harmanli it is U/C.
3,4km near Turkish border are also U/C.
Svilengrad's bypass is half-profile but some activity was reported there so it might be U/C soon.
The rest of it is ready.
Here's a map to clarify:

To Radi: Using the same tarmac on emregency lanes is dangerous and makes the road unsafe

Here you can see the finished part of the highway and the 3,4 km. which are U/C till the border crossing "Kapitan Andreevo".

The E-80 motorway (on the Serbian side) towards Bulgaria will be finished in mid or late 2013, just to point that out.

Why is the same motorway numbered A6 in the south (Struma right ? ), and A5 closer to Sofia?

Actually motorway's numbering in Bulgaria is really a mess! Here as A5 is numbered Lyulin motorway and as A6 - Struma motorway, as it was so anounsed while building Lyulin motorway. In fact after the completion in may this year on its traffic signs Lyulin motorway got numbered as A6.

Which motorway is A5 is still unknown.

A6 Struma motorway was supposed to start from the old road Sofia - Pernik and go to the Greek border. A5 Lyulin was additionally build as a separate project and as kind of a more distant belt-way.

I thought A5 was suppose to run via Pernik and Kyustendil to the Macedonian border.

Unfortunatelly, no motorway is predicted to be build to the border with FYROM... As far as I know it is a 2+2 expressway planned. But honestly it's not needed at this moment and in the near future because the traffic is not very intensive.

Chris, this is also possible and not contrary to what I said, as the Lyulin motorway replaces the old road Sofia - Pernik via Vladaya... And this road continues through Pernik for Kyustendil.

I've seen A5 for the section of the Black Sea coast motorway that's open, and A4 for the section of the Trakia motorway that's open near Burgas (even on maps that show Maritsa as A3).

There wont be a motorway to Macedonia, since it is in fact not needed and Macedonia has only poor roads and is one of the poorest countries in europe, when I see pics from Macedonia I am shocked how it looks, it can't even compare anymore to Albania and Kosovo, which are countries that started improving, I don#t knwo what is going on in Macedonia but the country needs to improve.

What is not current can come in the future. It's good to reserve numbers for future corridors.

Will there be a motorway on the Romanian side?

There are for the moment two expressways planned (Botevgrad-Vidin and Veliko Tarnovo-Ruse), and of course a large part of the missing A2 Hemus too (from Yablanitsa to Veliko Tarnovo).

They said recently that Sofia - Yablanitsa - Veliko Turnovo - Ruse will be build as a prioritized motorway/expressway in the next few years to connect Sofia and Bucharest.

P.S. radi6404 is cruel to our antique ( ) neighbours from the FYROM.. Real fun!
