It was told in the TV news this evening that the changes about the speed limit on motorways will be in force since tuesday, that means June 26, if one day actually matters...

JFY, in the video posted above around 70km are missing from Krupnik till Dren. Construction of lot 4 of Struma BG/GR border - Sandanski can be seen in the begining and lot 1 Dolna Dikanya - Dupnica around 18.50-19minute

BTW Sandanski entrance on 4.36 - wow!

Any idea if the speed change to 140Km will affect the Shumen - Varna highway? I think not since the road is not very good (especially the first 15-20 km from Schumen) but... maybe you know something more

Bulgaria Ups Hwy Speed Limit to 140 Km/H

The maximum speed limit on Bulgarian highways went up to 140 km/h at midnight Tuesday, but it is effective only for sections with the most modern pavement.

According to the newly adopted legislation, "vehicles can move with a speed of up to 140 km/h only in new sections where the pavement allows such speed."

The previous speed limit was 130 km/h. It remains 90 km/h in risky sections and highway sections built years ago.

The amendments to the Traffic Act also introduce the term "fast road," where drivers can develop speeds up to 120 km/h. These roads will not have an emergency lane, just some places to stop. They are yet to be built in Bulgaria and will cost about 30% less than regular highways.

Today there was a discussion on TV about that. You should drive with 140 km/h only on new asphalt, that is smooth without shaking. There will be no signage so you must be careful and feel the car whether the speed is appropriate or not..

I think they made the 140 km/h just for the only motorway in Bulgaria that has "smooth asphalt"... and we all know which one is this...

140 km/h will not apply to the Struma, because it's an expressway

It isn't even an expressway! Speed limit therе is 90 km/h becаuse of the missing permission for exploatation!

Yes, it will. If road condition is determined by the local road agency as inappropriate for 140 there will be signs with the safe speed limit. Otherwise you can drive 140 and noone will fine you.

This article is misleading. The principal of our National Road Agency said clearly that 140kmh is the default speed limit from now on.

THat's incorrect. Stop misleading people.

I think that there some technical problems as well. They are now fixing the angle of the sidebanks slopes around the motorway. You can see more pictures in bulgarian thread for Struma.

Bulgaria PM to Inaugurate Trakia Highway Stretch, New Road Junction

June 29, 2012

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov is to attend two ribbon-cutting ceremonies scheduled for Friday and Sunday.

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and European Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn will cut the ribbon Sunday on the Trakia Highway stretch between Nova Zagora and Stara Zagora.

The new highway stretch, which was completed ahead of term by the Magistrali Trace Consortium, is to allow Bulgarians to get to the seaside 20 minutes faster.

The remaining part of the Trakia Highway to the Petolachkata junction is to be finished by the beginning of August.

The highway stretch between Nova Zagora and Yambol is to be wrapped up by July 15.

The Trakia Highway has been scheduled for completion in February 2013, when the last contract for EU funding for the project expires.

The construction of the Trakia Highway costs EUR 362.5 M, of which EUR 286.2 is EU funding.

On Friday, Prime Minister Borisov will cut the ribbon on the new road junction at the exit of the Black Sea city of Burgas on the road to Sozopol.

Regional Development Minister Lilyana Pavlova will also attend the inauguration ceremony.

The new road junction is expected to ease the traffic flow to the southern part of Bulgaria's Black Sea coast and to eliminate traffic congestions at the exit of Burgas.

The project took about one year to complete.
