This month. When will you be able to give your expert judgement on the quality of the motorway?

Tomorrow is an exceptional day - the second rail&road bridge Calafat - Vidin between Romania and Bulgaria is opened. I cannot put it into words how important and expected is this bridge in Europe, the region and especially in Bulgaria.

I want to thank all people that helped and supported the bridge realization and provided footage(muchas gracias FCC) and information. Huge thanks to the financing institutions(EU, EIB, KfW, AFD), constructor(FCC) and governments of Romania and Bulgaria.

Wish you joy, prosperity, health and motorways to the bridge on both sides!

Today BBC made calculation of expenses for a lorry (truck) travelling from Greece to Germany:

(quote)
From Piraeus to Hamburg

Route 1: Greece-Macedonia-Serbia-Croatia-Slovenia-Austria-Germany: 2,641km; cost for a 20-tonne lorry: 580 euros

Route 2: Greece-Bulgaria -(Ruse-Giurgiu bridge) Romania - Hungary - Slovakia - Czech Republic - Germany: 3,157km; cost for a 20-tonne lorry: 500 euros

Route 3: Greece-Bulgaria- (new Vidin-Calafat bridge) Romania-Hungary-Slovakia-Czech Republic-Germany: 2,780km; cost for a 20-tonne lorry: 460 euros

Calculations refer to a trip from the Greek port of Piraeus to the German port of Hamburg. Costs include road tolls and fuel, but not waiting. Source: Fanty-G Transport

I think that the advantage of Vidin-Calafat bridge route compared to Serbia-Macedonia route is obvious.

Do you actually see a lorry driver taking a road through the mountains from Sofia to Vidin then a simple 1+1 road from Calafat to Timisoara rather than using motorways through Macedonia and Serbia?

The mountain route is I/81. I assume truckers will use A2 and I/1 which is a much better route. The direct route Sofia - Montana via I/81 is unsuitable for large trucks.

We shall see a lot of them in near future. As can be seen, roads in Bulgaria from Sofia to Vidin are equal, maybe even better than the road Niš-Dimitrovgrad. From Sofia to Botevgrad there is motorway and from Mezdra to Vraca 2x2 expressway.

And simple driving is far better than endless waiting in hours on EU-borders (HU-SER,BG-SER).

And I would bet on EU decision to fund motorways Timisoara-Calafat and Vidin-Botevgrad from cohesion funds very soon.

Frankly speaking: Serbia had to concentrate on building motorway from Niš to Dimitrovgrad instead of wasting resources with (excuse me, but this is hard truth) Azer and Chinese credited motorway to Bar. I mention it here because I'm convinced that editors of Serbian thread shouldn't allow to post it there.

Additionally, a full motorway route doesn't have the same advantage to a trucker like it does for a car driver. Trucks are limited at 80 - 90 km/h, so unless the route is curvy and goes through a lot of towns, the average speed on a non-motorway or motorway doesn't vary a whole lot for trucks.

Plus, you have to see this bridge in context of near-future developments, not the current network, which is indeed lacking, especially in Romania. This new bridge will be a huge cataclysm for future developments. In addition, this bridge is also useful for a link between Beograd and București, especially if the planned Craiova - București Expressway and the Paraćin - Zaječar Expressway will be constructed by 2020-2025.

Any new road project would take at least 4 maybe 5 years, unfortunately. I personally would favor a fast road from Calafat to DN6 near Drobeta Tr. Severin, which is a main road and quite good in quality. Then, that would lead you to future A1 through Lugoj - 160km, aprox 2 1/2 hours with no major city to pass through.

Chriss, the motorway from Craiova to Pitesti would help Romanian traffic or better yet heavy traffic to Constanta Port.. I would not see that as much help to International heavy traffic coming from Bulgaria..

That's the idea.
Currently, Montana and Vratsa bypasses are U/C.
Vidin - Montana technical project for an expressway is under design.
Preparation and construction on other sections would be finished till 2020.
