The most impressive part in lot 1 Dolna Dikanya - Dupnitsa is the 40m tall Dyakovo viaduct over IV-6232 near village of Dyakovo. Unfortunately, it won't be in use until lot 2 Dupnitsa - Blagoevgrad is built.

40 meters are not much. The exit however looks special, since it is very long, goes upwards, while the motorway goes down and has very long and gentle curves. Most exits are much shorter around europe.

We have more data from this article(ing BG):

-31 000 vehicles in the first two weeks(they were free). This makes 2214 vehicles per day.
-more than 11 000 trucks. This makes more than 786 trucks per day.

Bulgarian tomato producers are protesting because romanians managed to flood the market. There was a sharp decrease in tomato price at Vidin vegetable market. So trade is blossoming at the expense of northwestern bulgarian tomato producers

Botev fans might be the first to use the highway to Burgas tomorrow because more than 10,000 fans are expected to go from Plovdiv to Burgas for the Europa League game vs. Astana. That's a lot of traffic and this is why they are thinking about letting the fans use the highway before the official opening on Monday.

The fans officially opened the new highway. The police opened the barrier and let them use the brand new road. These people have pictures and I will post links soon.

Tomorrow the section Yambol-east - Karnobat of Trakia motorway[A1] will be put into service. By this the whole A1 will finally be completed making it the first completely built motorway if we don't count Lyulin motorway[A6]. A1 is 360km and connects the capital Sofia with the seaside town and port Burgas. It serves E80, E773, CIV, CVIII, CX, Sofia(~1.2mln), Pazardzhik(71k), Plovdiv(338k), Stara Zagora(138k), Sliven(91k), Yambol(74k), Burgas(200k) and many more. Construction begun in 1973.

Since Struma will obvously be delayed lets update our small chart:

How is this data compared to intial estimations? Personally, I don't find it impressive at a bit over 1 k vehicles / day. What's the freight traffic?

Bulgarian National TV report:

Those priests consecrating the motorway look really weird to me. How is this tradition viewed in Bulgaria?

Every time something is opened or inaugurated priests are invited to give a blessing whether it's a highway, factory or a new apartment even. It's a tradition and I don't see why it bothers you.

Compared to my last post about opening dates it will. We have information from today that the opening date could be pushed even further back in time to July 22.
On the other hand, everything is okay since the deadline in the contract is in August.

Isn't it an orthodox tradition?

I find it completely normal and think we must preserve it.
However, I thought that the girls in national costumes carrying bread and salt were more amusing for a foreigner.
