I thought they were going to expand I/1 to a four-lane highway?

This is the general plan, but some sections like Vratsa and Dimovo bypasses get through as 1x2 roads.

The new highway /speed way/ will be mainly on a new trace!

AFAIK, apart from Dimovo bypasses it would be rebuilding the I-1. Even Vratsa bypass might be reconstructed as 2x2 when the railway route is finally built/chosen.

Dimovo bypass which will also have 1+1 lanes is a temporary solution. Right now an engineering design of Vidin-Vratsa expessway (2x2 lanes, grade-separated) is in the final stage of drafting and the shown options indicate that it will have a completely new route:

Well the red and pink routes follow I-1 from Vidin to Valchek. Then the suggestions diverge near Dimovo until somewhere around Ruzhintsi.

From Ruzhintsi to Montana is the same - several routes with few village and terrain obstacles bypasses depending on the proposed routebut mostly rebuilding I-1.

Indeed....but there is a problem......
Numerous illegal refugees and travellers cross the Greek-Bulgarian borders every day and sometimes they may carry illegal stuff, too.
It's a common problem, not only in that border but in every border crossing in Greece....so if Bulgaria enters the Schengen things are going to change dramatically and the situation will become even worse....

Wait what ? I don't rly understand what you mean. You mean that there ll be numerous refugees from Bulgaria to Greece when we enter shengen or the oposite that there ll be more immigrants who ll try to enter Greece illegally and then who ll cross the Bulgarian border on they way to the western part of the EU? Our obligation to the shengen community is to keep our borders safe with the countries outside the union like Serbia, Macedonia and Turkey. The biggest problem is the border with Turkey, from where the main stream of immigrants ll try to enter. Currently there is construction of 30km border fence, which can be extended to the whole lenght if its needed and our gov didn't spend that much tax payer money for equipment to full fill the criteria so we can always hear NO.

I've travelled from Bucharest to Greece the past days and I've completed the Ruse - Makaza route for the first time, indeed quite better and shorter than via Sofia - Kulata or Svilengrad. I know there's even a project for an express road Ruse - Makaza but that's another story
Two things I've noticed:
- the Gabrovo roads are a mess. Some 2-3 years ago when I've been there for the first time everything was decent, the center of the town was ok, now it's a total mess, any details on what the works are there about and how long before it gets back to normal?
- the A4 interchange near Haskovo (and Dimitrovgrad) is far from being completed, as well as the A4 in that area for that matter. Will it be completed this year after all or whould we expect delays?

This is exactly the opposite from the expected results from Greek party

Greece is the only Shengen country that has obvious benefits from the BG and RO entrance in Schengen area, especially in the important topic of illegal immigration.
And that the reason that never Greek authorities raise any objection on that.

Currently, Greece is the outer border of Schengen area in the sensitive area of Eastern Mediterranean and thousands of illegal immigrants reach Greece from Turkey and Middle East. But they get trapped here as Greece is isolated from the rest of Schengen countries (where their real destination is) and the ferry link Greece - Italy can be easily controlled.

After BG and RO entrance in Schengen, route TR -> BG -> RO -> Central Europe will be more attractive for illegal immigrant caravans than TR-> GR -> IT.

1. Gabrovo has a large integrated water cycle project.
2. Haskovo IC - Harmanli might be completed this year. A1 - Haskovo IC is expected to be delayed for next year.

You can look at the road quality map

Legend:
Red - bad quality (potholes etc.)
Orange - mediocre/satisfactory quality (the road is not perfect, eg not smooth etc.; no potholes)
Green - good quality (smooth and comfortable ride)
