I believe we have introduced new designs for rest areas(+/- service area):

Bulgaria Gives Go-Ahead to Planned Motorway to Serbia

The expert council at the Bulgarian Ministry of Regional Development presided by deputy-minister Angel Petrov has given green light to the planned construction of a motorway to Serbia. It will be based on the existing Kalotina – Sofia ring road I-8 route.

Once the detailed plan of the 49 km-long motorway is approved my regional development minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, it will open the way for land expropriation, planning, engineering and construction works.

Bridge alignments at 4 locations on the Danube river between Romania and Bulgaria have been chosen(the red ones, green and orange were just other alignment propositions):

I think it depends on the condition of the bridge at Ruse. If it isn't expected to last to past 2030, they would have to replace that bridge first by a modern four-lane highway / rail bridge. It would be a real problem if they have to close it before a replacement bridge is constructed.

2030 means the bridge will be nearly 80 years old.

I have read that they cannot determine the state of the bridge with certainty because the technical project for the bridge had gone missing.

Wow. I hope they are doing frequent bridge inspections.

But it is a combined rail/road bridge. Railway bridges tend to last longer due to being 'overdesigned' vs 'underdesigned' road bridges. Just look at Germany or the United States, many road bridges less than 60 years old are in the process of being replaced, while many 100+ year old railway bridges are still in everyday operation.
This could indicate the condition of the Ruse Bridge may not be as bad, but it's difficult to judge that based on photos or a drive-by (not all rusty bridges are necessarily in dangerous condition).

I think the obvious choice would be a new Giurgiu-Ruse combined (motorway+railway) bridge. It is part of the Corridor IX, but beyond that, it connects the whole eastern part of Romania and the former USSR states with Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. Not to mention it is the best choice Bucharest-, Ploiești-, Prahova Valley- and Brașov-wise (meaning all together some 4 million people or more). And as Chris mentioned the old bridge might not be reliable anymore hence it is prone to be replaced.

Exactly,a copy of the new Europe bridge ( Vidin-Calafat) would fit perfectly!

The best route is Turnu Magurele-Nikopol.Thats the shortest path between Sofia and Bucharest. It will boost the economy.

Also, a bridge at Nikopol would reduce the ~300 km no-bridge gap b/n Vidin and Ruse. Only 2 cross border Danube bridges are insufficient.

Yes. It is believed that the Romanian government might oppose paying for the bridge/adjacent infrastructure and connecting to its most southern part of Dobruja through another country, i.e. Calarasi(RO) - Silistra(BG) - Ostrov(RO)(as you may know Romania promised to finance the 3rd bridge).

I personally want the third bridge to be exactly Calarasi-Silistra, not Calarasi-Osrtov, and to be a combined road-railway bridge like New Europe bridge. IMHO, Bulgaria should offer to pay for it in exchange for a road-railway tunnel between Tulcea and Izmail.

Terrain on the Romanian bank might turn out to be quite tricky - part of the former danubian flood plain.

It may be the shortest path, but the infrastructure to and from Turnu Magurele and Nikopol is not in that condition to carry the main traffic between these two capitals.

As already said Ruse Giurgiu would help more - Corridor IX passes through! And not only!

In my opinion a simple 2 lane bridge would be cheaper and enough to carry the traffic volumes to 2050 (together with the existing one).

If we are not taking into consideration border controls maybe 2040. But waiting trucks and non-eu citizens are creating queues now
