Highways of Bulgaria remind me of the highways of Morocco.

You mean the design (signs, crash barriers, generall look) or the landscape?

2. Vidin-Montana expressway
3. Hemus motrway[A2] Yablanitsa-east - Lovech
4. E-79(expressway?) Mezdra-Botevgrad
5. Shipka tunnel on I-5

List of projects that will be financed under the OP "CEF" in 2014-20:
1. Improvement of sailing on Danube river(Batin-Belene mainly). I wonder if our northen neighbours are ready with papers on this project.
2. Vidin - Medkovets railway
3. Sofia - Dragoman railway

4. SRB border - Kalotina - Sofia motorway
There is a major shift in transport strategy and the plans for its financing and prioritization:
OP "Transport" road projects will be financed 50:50 while railway and water projects will remain at a 15:85 ratio. The priorities now are:
1. Struma motorway[A3] lot 3 Blagoevgrad - Sandanski. Hopefully, including the 15km tunnel. Now only time is an issue.
2. Hemus motorway[A2] Yablanitsa-east - Shumen. Design projects not ready, but they might go for design&built tenders.
3. Shipka tunnel on I-5

Sofia-SRB border motorway[A?] is dropped from CEF. It will be financed from EBRD, EIB and WB loans.

Is there more info on the 'Shipka Tunnel'? Length, double or single tube, cost, etc?

Length: 3.22km
Access roads: new 1x2 roads; no plans for expansion to 2x2; Gabrovo and Kazanlak bypasses were/are/to be built/reconstructed
Number of tubes: only one; 1x2; no plans for adding a second one
Cost: 150mln euro
Risks for project: ecological opposition because it will go through national park
Stage: design stage

IMO: I-5 should become a motorway with a longer tunnel that will reduce impact of the road on the ecosystem there

Why do I have a feeling that Kalafat - Vidin bridge severely loses it's potential cos there's no secured financing of any good link from it to major corridors in Bulgaria until 2020. If we take into account that Kalotina - Sofia motorway gets completed in that timeframe, which is more or less not so expensive project after all, there will definitely be no sense for any transit commuters using Vidin-Kalafat bridge, as much as it's current situation. Can someone enlighted me why Bulgaria doesn't force that Vidin - Montana - Botevgrad link cos it's the only way to use the new bridge at the full potential, and possibly pay it back with Europe - Turkey commuters possibly switching on it

The explanation could be the lack of enough funds. The estimated costs for the priority projects are as follows: lot 3 of Struma motorway - 850 M euro (tunnels!); Hemus motorway (Yablanitsa-Belokopitovo| - 780 M; Shipka tunnel - 150 M. Total 1.78 billion euro.

The good news are that the national cofinancing probably would be raised up to 50% and, thus, some ~1.2-1.3 billion euro will be available for construction of new motorways. Still, even these money may not be enough.

Edit: According to the minister of transport, Botevgrad-Vidin expressway and Kalotina motorway could be financed by EIB loan (or at least part of them). That would be the best solution.

Probably in the next few years they will finish the expansion into 2x2 of the whole length from Botevgrad to Vratsa. It should have been finished already with the money from the 2007-2013 period, but at the end money were relocated to fund other projects.

At the moment they are building a 2x2 bypass of Montana.
Аpprox. 12 km. long.

Hi everyone. Is there any news, or even rumors, why AKTOR stop working on Struma Lot 4?

They want our road agency to give the the rock material and technology to finish the motorway. Literally. I am not joking.

There are some negotiations but it looks like the contract will soon be terminated and the lot retendered.

OMG! It's ridiculous and shame! Especially next to Lot-2's fantastic, as it looks, progress. The Greek side of Struma should be ready 5+ years ago and they are still keep struggling for similar reasons.

Unfortunate Greek companies have huge experience messing up European road infrastructure projects

Thank you for your reply Gubot.

Without wanting to argue with you, just to mantion, that AKTOR managed to deliver Lot 2 of A1 Trakia between Nova Zagora und Yambol in better quality and price, that Lot 1 by the Bulgarian TRACE!

I'm not against them. They have done very cool works in Greece too. I'm just tired to see the connection Sofia-Thessaloniki struggling to happen since... forever! Anyway... things are definitely much better nowadays. Even hard way... we get there
