It looks like the Bulgarian authorities have the same bad habit as the Romanian ones: inaugurate bits and pieces of motorways, instead of waiting for the whole thing to be finished.
Anyway, I hope in a few years I'll be able to drive on a motorway to Thessaloniki, starting the bypass of Sofia. By the way, what is the current state of Sofia's bypass/ring road?

A 3 km section of the western arc of the ring road b/n A6 and Kakach river is U/C and should be completed till October this year. Also, works have begun on Sofia Northern Bypass, 16.5 km, and it has to be completed in 2016.

Well, I don't think it's practical to wait to open the whole 150 km highway, that has around 20 km of tunnels alone, goes through very mountainous regions, costs around 1.5 billion Euro and may be finished around 2020, the earliest.

For example, for many greeks highway to Sandanski is enough - they go there for the SPA or to shop.

Same for the Lot leading to Blagoevgrad. It's a big university city, and it's connection to the capital by a highway will be very beneficial for the region

And the most important for Struma is that this is an upgrade of the old way, and now the traffic is relocated through narrow village paths, so it's good to be opened as soon as possible.

SuperXerxes77 was not talking about the whole motorway, only about lot 4.

But yes, these openings are needed, as this segment of the motorway is being built on the old alignment of I-1 road. The openings relieve the traffic from the detours via Petrich and several villages.

I'm not saying there should be no openings, I'm saying the officials should not come to show off at ribbon cutting for every 5 km of motorway.
I don't know about Bulgaria, but here they inaugurated portions of motorway that for the moment are leading to nowhere.

With the opening of lot 4 of A3, now we can expect intensifying of works on lot 1 (Chirpan-Dimitrovgrad) of A4 Maritsa motorway, as the same construction company, Agromah, has recently acquired Patishta Plovdiv the main subcontractor at lot 1 of A4. The initial deadline was in 2013, but the works have been significantly delayed and the new deadline is October 2015.

Extensive report by momchilg follows:

@the beginning of lot 1 at km 5. It has to be connected the old segment that leads to A1 motorway and RIA has recently signed contract for this.

@overpass at km 15

@km 16, towards south

towards north

overpass over railway track

the most delayed segment is south of it

rest area at km 31

overpass at km 32

at km 33, towards north

towards south, the end of the lot can be seen

Is it just me, or do the markings make it really really hard to turn left coming from Targovishte towards Ruse? The same for the other dirrection (even if it's less likely, it should still be possible). You would have to cross 3 lanes in less than 100m, at relatively high-speed, to make a low-speed U-turn. And right after you do that, you're interwoven with traffic driving towards the motorway, which has greater numbers and speeds. Pretty crazy and poor solution if you ask me

Itīs more than 100 m, I would say something b/n 150 and 200 m. Indeed that direction is not conflict-free, but it has to be okay, as traffic from Targovishte to Ruse has a shorter route directly to Razgrad.

ChrisZwolle, it is time to edit the map on first page. 2 new motorway sections are in use already.
